Eight Kinds of Kumbhaka
Hatha Yoga Pradipika 2.44
Meaning · English
Now the kinds of kumbhaka, the holding of the breath. Sun-piercing, ujjayi, the hissing breath and the cooling breath; then the bellows, the bee, the fainting and the floating. These are the eight kumbhakas.
This is a list, and the Pradipika gives no method in it. Kumbhaka comes from kumbha, a pot. The breath is held the way water is held in a filled pot, still and contained. The text says there are eight kinds, and it names them. The commentary reads the line the same way: it simply states the eight by their names. Take the names one at a time. Suryabhedana is 'piercing the sun'. In the tradition the sun is the right nostril. Ujjayi means 'victorious'. Sitkari is named for the hissing 'sit' sound made in it. Shitali means 'cooling'. Bhastrika is the bellows of a blacksmith. Bhramari is the bee. Murccha is fainting. Plavini is floating. So the names already say something. Some point to a nostril, some to a sound, some to a temperature, some to an animal or a tool. Murccha names an effect that a careful practitioner would not want to reach. Long holds and fast breathing can bring dizziness or a real faint, so this list is no invitation to try all eight from a page. The reason for the list is practical. The Pradipika wants the reader to know the whole set before each one is taught. It then goes on to the manner of each. What this asks of a practitioner is to learn the eight as eight separate things. None is a synonym for another, and a beginner starts without any hold at all.
A woman in a choir hums softly on the way to rehearsal, warming her voice, and notices her breathing slow down. That small scene touches one name on this list, the bee. Slow, steady breathing is something doctors do recommend for calming down, and humming on the out-breath is one common way to do it. Beyond that, little can be said for each of the eight separately. There is no good evidence that one kumbhaka cools the body, or that another pierces anything. The sun, the nostril channels and prana are the tradition's own account and have no match in physiology. Some of the names do match known effects. Fast, forceful breathing like the bellows can bring on light-headedness, tingling or faintness, because it changes the gas balance in the blood. Holding the breath for long can do the same. The old name murccha seems to know this. People with heart or lung conditions, high blood pressure, epilepsy, or pregnancy should ask their doctor first. A teacher in person matters here more than a page.
