Held Mind, Not Sleeping

Gaudapada Karika 3.34

Meaning · English

The mind that has been held back, free of imagining, belonging to a wise person: its way of moving is to be understood as different from deep sleep. It is not the same as that. In deep sleep the mind dissolves. The held mind does not dissolve. That very mind is Brahman, free of fear, with the light of knowing on every side.

Three words carry the verse. Nigrihita means held back or restrained, from ni, down, and grah, to grasp: the mind has been gathered in, not crushed. Nirvikalpa means without vikalpa, the mind's habit of imagining and splitting things into this and that. Laya means dissolving or merging, which is what happens to the mind in deep sleep. Gaudapada first says the restrained mind of a wise person moves in a way that is not the same as sleep. Then he gives the reason. In sleep the mind melts away, so nothing is known. In the held mind it does not melt. It stays present and awake, only without imagining. Then he says what that mind is: Brahman, free of fear, lit all around by knowing. Fear needs a second thing to fear. Where only one is seen, there is none. This is taught here because the practice he is describing could be mistaken for a blank trance, and a blank would teach nothing. Shankara reads the sleeping mind as still carrying its seeds of imagining, which wake again afterward. The held mind has none. The text asks the listener to tell stillness that knows from stillness that merely switches off.

Think of a lake at night with a thick fog on it, and the same lake on a clear windless dawn. In both the surface is quiet. In the fog nothing can be seen. At dawn every shore shows in the water. Deep sleep is the fog; the held mind is the clear dawn.

1. Tonight, before sleep, sit on the bed for two minutes with the lights low and let your thoughts run without following them. 2. Notice the difference between being quiet and being drowsy. Quiet keeps you aware; drowsiness fades. 3. If you grow sleepy, open your eyes and sit up straighter, then continue. 4. Try the same for two minutes tomorrow morning, after washing your face, when you are fresh.

A night-shift nurse sits in her car at dawn, too tired to start the engine. She tells herself she is resting, but her mind is only fogged, slipping in and out, replaying the ward. The verse separates two kinds of quiet she may be confusing. Numbness and drifting are one kind. Gaudapada's teaching points to another, where the mind is held steady and stays awake. In her car, the step is to notice which one she is in. If she is simply spent, she needs real sleep. If she is awake but crowded with thoughts, she can let them pass for a minute without joining them and see what remains. Ordinary experience confirms that a tired mind cannot hold attention and that rest and alertness are different things. The verse does not promise that this settles exhaustion, and it is no replacement for sleep, or for a doctor if the tiredness does not lift.
