Beyond Sleep and Dream
Gaudapada Karika 3.36
Meaning · English
Unborn, without sleep, without dream, without name, without form, shining forth once and for all, all-knowing: no figure of speech is at work here, in any way.
Gaudapada describes Brahman by taking things away. Aja, unborn, means it has no beginning, so nothing made it and nothing ends it. Nidra is sleep, and svapna is dream. Both are states the mind passes into and out of, and Brahman is said to be free of both. Nama and rupa, name and form, are the two handles by which we grasp anything. With both removed, the word has nothing to hold. Then two positive words. Sakrd-vibhata means lit once, for all time: this light does not flicker on and off the way our attention does. Sarvajna means all-knowing, with nothing outside its sight. The last phrase, nopacarah kathamcana, says no upacara, no figurative or loose speech, in any way. The commentators take it to mean these are not poetic stand-ins. Gaudapada claims they say what is so. This is taught here because the nearby verses describe a mind held still, neither sunk in sleep nor scattered. A student could ask what that stillness reaches. The answer is that it reaches what was already there, unborn and awake. Negation is the method, much as the Buddhist thinkers of his time also spoke by denial. The listener is asked to stop looking for a thing with a name and a shape.
A lamp burns all night in a room where people doze, dream and wake again. It never sleeps and holds no dream of its own. Brahman is that lamp: the light the changing states are seen by, not one of the states.
1. Tonight, when you lie down, watch the moment before sleep for about a minute. Notice thoughts thinning without trying to stop them. 2. In the morning, before getting up, ask what noticed the night: the sleep, the dream, the waking. 3. Once today, pick any object and drop its name in your mind for ten seconds. Look at it only as shape and colour.
A man sits awake at three in the morning outside a hospital ward where his brother is sleeping off surgery. His own sleep will not come. He is tired, and his thoughts grow louder with every hour. Ordinary experience bears out that tiredness makes the mind noisier. The verse speaks to this in steps. First, sleeplessness is a state, like dreaming, and states come and go. Second, the text teaches that what knows the state is not itself sleepy or restless. Third, he can name what he feels, fear or tiredness, and then see that the naming sits on top of plain awareness of the room, the lights, the hum of the corridor. That is a small, practical loosening. He may rest a little easier, though nothing here promises sleep. It also does not take away his worry for his brother. Long-lasting sleeplessness is a matter for a doctor, and the verse is no replacement for one. What the text offers is a different place to stand while the night passes.
