Free of all speech, risen from all thinking, deeply still, shining once and for all: this is samadhi, unmoving and without fear. There is no grasping there and no rejecting, for worry is nowhere found. Then knowledge rests in the self, unborn, gone into sameness.

Four words carry this verse. Abhilapa is speech, from lap, to utter: every spoken label and every inner sentence. Samadhi comes from roots meaning to put together and settle: the mind set down in one place. Graha is grasping, from grah, to seize. Utsarga is casting away, the push that sends a thing off. Last, ajati means unborn, and samata means sameness. The verse describes the settled mind. It has no speech and no thought rising in it, so it is quiet through and through. It shines at once, not in stages, and it does not shake. Because it is unmoving, nothing in it fears. Then comes the center of the verse: where worry does not arise, there is no grasping and no rejecting. Those two are the mind's usual motions, wanting a thing and pushing it away. Without them, knowledge sits in the self. It is called unborn because the self it rests in was never produced, and it has gone to sameness because nothing in it differs from anything else. Gaudapada says this right after teaching how the held-back mind differs from the mind sunk in sleep. A reader would ask what the mind is like once it truly rests. The answer is that it has stopped reaching and stopped pushing. Shankara reads this as the mind's rest being nothing other than knowledge of the self, though the commentators differ on details. The idea of the unborn also echoes Nagarjuna's language of non-arising, reached by another road. The verse asks the listener to notice grasping and rejecting as the two motions that keep the mind busy.

A glass of muddy water left on a table. Stirred, it stays cloudy. Left alone, the grit sinks and the water clears without anyone cleaning it. The stirring is grasping and rejecting; the clear water is knowledge resting in the self.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with a glass of water on the table before you, and watch the room without doing anything about it. 2. When a thought pulls you toward something, notice it and call it grasping, quietly. 3. When a thought pushes something away, call it rejecting. 4. Then let both go by without following them, and notice what is left between them. Stop when the five minutes end.

A woman sits on a night train after a quarrel with her sister. She replays the last words again and again. She grasps at what she should have said, and she pushes away the memory of her sister's face. Her shoulders are tight and sleep will not come. The verse describes what would change at that moment. First she sees the two motions for what they are: wanting a better ending and refusing the one she got. Then she lets one sentence finish without adding another. The breath lengthens a little, as it does when a mind stops arguing with itself. What is left is plain: a tired woman on a train, with the quarrel still true. The verse does not promise that the quarrel mends, that grief or hurt vanishes, or that rest replaces help from a doctor when sleeplessness persists. Ordinary experience only confirms that a mind that stops chasing and refusing settles faster than one that keeps at both.
