Three Grades of Self Knowledge Mastery
Tripura Rahasya 20.111
The story · English
The voice of the teacher, the supreme knowledge herself, goes on. She speaks of the powers that tempt a seeker, and she is plain about them. They only get in the way of true knowledge of the Self. They are like the tricks of a conjurer, and no one should chase them. For a person to whom even the state of Brahma is worth no more than a blade of grass, what are these small powers? They are only ways of passing time. There is one real attainment, she says, and it is the knowledge of the Self. Through it, grief is ended completely and a deep, thick joy fills the mind. Only this frees a person from the grip of death. Nothing else does.
This knowledge of the Self, she tells the sages, is not all of one kind. It differs by the practice followed, by how clear the mind has become, and by how fully the knowledge has ripened. In short, it comes in three grades: the best, the middle and the lowest. To explain, she gives a picture from ordinary life. Think of how the sages learn the sacred verses by heart, through sharp memory and long practice, even while their days are crowded with a hundred tasks. The best learner recites without a slip, whether his mind is gathered at that moment or busy with something else. The middle learner also recites without a slip, but only when he keeps up the effort of attention. The lowest reaches the same flawless recitation only with the most constant effort.
Self-knowledge, she says, has the same three grades. In the best, the person stays in the knowledge through great undertakings, and also when he sets them aside. At every moment the memory of the Self is neither less nor more. That is the best. The middle and the lowest need more effort. Here, she says, the best is the far limit of mastery. Even in dreams and other states, the person rests in the highest state, as steady as in a moment of clear thought. This comes without strain. A person busy with the world sees all things and yet does not see two. He acts as if awake and yet is like someone asleep. At that point the mastery is complete.
She then describes the person who has reached this. He is called the best among the masters. Though busy in the world, he never lets go of that settled calm. He is wise, and he knows the state of every kind of knower, through his own experience and within himself. No doubt and no desire remains in him, not even a trace, and he moves through daily life without fear. All pleasure and pain, and all the business of waking life, he knows to be in his own Self. He sees himself as bound and as free, and as the Self of all. He sees the nets of bondage clearly, always within himself, and he looks for liberation nowhere else.
Then the teacher says the last thing plainly. I am that best master myself, she says. There is no difference between us at all. She tells the sages that she has spoken this very clearly, and whoever understands it is never confused again. With that, the supreme knowledge fell silent. The sages heard it all and put their doubts aside. They bowed to Shiva and the other guardians of the worlds, and each went back to his own home. The teller then turns to Bhargava, the one listening, and says that this song of knowledge washes away sins and gives the kingdom of one's own Self. For those who read it each day, she is pleased, and she herself gives them knowledge. For those sinking in the dark sea of worldly life, she is the sun.
