Avadhuta Gita 1.21

Meaning · English

Know that what has form is untrue, and the formless is unbroken always. Taught this truth, one is not born again. The wise say that one truth alone, the same everywhere. When craving is let go, the mind is no longer one or many. How can there be samadhi for what is not the self? How for what is the self? How can it be "it is" or "it is not", if freedom's nature is all one? You are pure, the truth that is level, bodiless, unborn, undying. "I know" or "I do not know": how can you think of the self in such terms?

Four verses run together here, and they build one argument. The key words first. Akara means shape or form; nirakara is without it. Samadhi means "putting together" and names the settled stillness at the end of meditation. Raga is colouring, the pull of liking. Tattva is "that-ness", what a thing really is. Now the clauses. The avadhuta tells the listener that whatever has a shape is untrue, in the sense that it does not last, while the shapeless is steady without a break. Taking this in is said to end rebirth. The wise name one truth, level and the same everywhere. Once raga is dropped, the mind stops counting itself as one or as many. Then the questions. If something is not the self, why enter samadhi for it? If it is the self, it is already so, and nothing needs reaching. Saying "it exists" or "it does not" belongs to a world of two, and freedom, he says, is all one. Last he speaks to the listener directly: you are pure, bodiless, unborn, undying. Then why say "I know the self" or "I do not know it"? The self is not an object one can know or fail to know. This answers a worry a seeker carries: have I reached the state yet? The avadhuta says the question itself is the knot. What is asked of the listener is to stop treating the self as a prize that is somewhere else.

A woman hunts through every room for her spectacles, lifting cushions and opening drawers, while they sit on her head. She needs no better search, only to stop searching. The self is the spectacles, and the hunt is the effort to reach it.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with no aim of becoming calm. 2. When you catch yourself thinking "I am not doing this right", notice that thought as one more passing thing. 3. Notice who is aware of it, and leave that awareness as it is. 4. When the five minutes end, stand up without grading them.

A retired schoolteacher has sat for twenty minutes every dawn for years. Today her mind raced, and she rises feeling she failed. The avadhuta's questions meet her there. The grading, "good sitting" or "bad sitting", is itself a pair of opposites, and the text says the self stands outside both. So she can set down the scorecard, and what remains is simply someone who sat and noticed. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: measuring ourselves while we rest tends to keep us tense. The verses teach that the self is already free, bodiless and unborn, so no state needs earning. That is the text's teaching, and it is not tested here. The limit is plain. It does not promise that the next sitting will be quiet, or that restlessness, worry or low mood will lift. If sleeplessness or heaviness of spirit persists for weeks, a doctor is the right person to see, and the verse does not replace one.
