By sayings like "you are that," the self is truly shown. "Not this, not this," the scripture says, and calls the body made of five elements untrue. Within the self, by the self, everything is full of you, without a gap. The meditator, the meditation, the mind: none of these is yours. How can the shameless mind meditate? I do not know Shiva, so how do I speak of him? I do not know Shiva, so how do I worship him? If I am Shiva, then I am the highest truth, even in nature and like the sky. I am not "the truth" either. The even truth is free of any cause for imagining. It is free of grasped and grasper. How could it be known by itself?

The avadhuta Dattatreya sings this as one who has dropped every method. Four terms carry it. Tat tvam asi means "you are that": the self is pointed to directly, not reached by effort. Neti neti means "not this, not this": the scripture clears away what is not the self, starting with the body made of five elements, which the text calls untrue in the sense that it does not last or stay as one thing. Dhyatr and dhyana, meditator and meditation, come from dhyai, to contemplate. The song says neither belongs to you, and even the mind is not yours. So it asks, with a wry edge, how the mind can meditate at all. Then it turns on worship. If he does not know Shiva, he cannot speak of him or praise him. If he is Shiva, there is no one apart to praise. Last, he lets go even of the word "truth." He says he is not "the truth" as an object, because the even truth is free of the habit of imagining. Grahya and grahaka, the grasped and the grasper, are both gone. So the closing question stands: how could such a thing be known by itself, as one thing knowing another? The question being answered is what remains to be done once the self is already full everywhere. The answer given is that doing, knowing and worshipping all need two, and the self has no second.

A man hunts through every room for his glasses while they sit on his forehead. The hunting, the hunter and the thing hunted are all one head. The teaching says the self is the glasses already there, so searching for it by meditation only keeps up the hunt.

1. Sit for five minutes today, at any quiet moment, as you usually would to calm yourself. 2. When you notice yourself grading how well it is going, stop and ask, "Who is watching this grading?" 3. Do not answer. Just notice that the watcher cannot be pointed at like a cup on a table. 4. Afterwards, drink a glass of water and carry on with the day.

A retired schoolteacher sits on her mat at dawn. Twenty minutes in, she is marking herself: restless again, thoughts wandering, a poor sitting. Her jaw is tight from trying to be calm. The verse would change that moment in small steps. First, it names the marker as one more thing passing through, since the text says the meditator and the meditation are not hers. Second, it asks whether anyone is really needed to do the sitting. Third, it lets the effort loosen a little, because the text says what she looks for is not an object she can grasp. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: trying hard to relax usually keeps the body tense. The verse does not promise that her mind will go quiet or that restlessness will end. It does not say what to do about poor sleep, or about a low mood that lasts for weeks. For those, a doctor is the right person to see. Its claim is narrower: the one who judges the sitting is not the self the song speaks of.
