Trusting the Unseen Testimony

And the Veda is reliable in the way mantra and Ayurveda are reliable, because that reliability comes from the reliability of the trustworthy ones who taught them.
The question is this: why trust the Veda when much of what it promises, such as the fruits of rites and what follows death, cannot be checked? For the Nyaya, the Veda earns trust the same way two familiar things do: mantra, the protective spoken formulas, and Ayurveda, the traditional medicine. Vatsyayana explains how those two prove themselves. Follow Ayurveda's advice and the promised good arrives. Avoid what it forbids and the harm stays away. Mantras used against poison, evil spirits or lightning, he says, are borne out in use too. The source of this is the apta, the trustworthy speaker. Vatsyayana gives the apta three marks: firsthand knowledge of the matter, compassion for beings who cannot find it out alone, and the wish to tell things exactly as they are. Since the same trustworthy seers and teachers stand behind both the checked part and the unchecked part, the unchecked part's reliability is inferred from the checked. Some Vedic rites even promise visible results. The same three marks make any ordinary informant trustworthy.
A hiking map has proved exact on every trail you have walked, down to the bend by the stream. You trust its markings for the pass beyond the ridge, which you have never seen. The trails you walked are Ayurveda and mantra. The pass is the unseen part of the Veda. The map-maker's care is what links the two.
Philosophers today call this the epistemology of testimony, and it remains a live debate. Reductionists, in the line of Hume, hold that we may trust a source only as far as its track record justifies. Anti-reductionists, following Thomas Reid, hold that trusting honest speakers is a basic, default source of knowledge. The Nyaya argument mixes the two: it rests on a track record, and it explains that record through the speaker's knowledge, honesty and goodwill. That explanation matches how we judge experts now. The weak link is the step from the seen to the unseen. A source accurate in one domain is not thereby accurate in another, so modern medicine tests each claim separately. Spoken charms against poison or lightning have no support in today's evidence. Whether claims about life after death could ever be tested is still open.
