Not four only, for tradition, presumption, inclusion and absence are also valid. The denial fails: tradition is not different from testimony, and presumption, inclusion and absence are not different from inference.

The question is how many pramanas there are. A pramana is a reliable source of knowledge. Nyaya lists four: perception, inference, comparison and testimony. An objector says the list is too short and names four more. Tradition is hearsay passed down with no named source: 'so people said'. Presumption is what a statement forces on you. Vatsyayana's example: 'no rain without clouds' brings with it 'rain when there are clouds'. Inclusion is knowing the part from the whole, as a large grain measure contains the smaller measures inside it. Absence is learning from what fails to happen: rain not falling tells you the wind's contact with the clouds is holding the water up. Nyaya answers that these do give knowledge, but they are not new sources. Vatsyayana explains that tradition is a kind of testimony, and the other three each reach something unseen through a known connection, which is what inference is. The list of four stands.

Someone hands you four new tools for your kit. You look closely. Each is a bit that clicks into the screwdriver handle you already own. They are useful, and you will use them, but you do not need four more handles. Nyaya treats the objector's four extra sources the same way: real working pieces that fit into two existing ones.

Modern epistemology also sorts sources of knowledge, usually into perception, memory, reasoning and testimony, and it too resists adding a new category for every pattern. Nyaya's reductions mostly hold up. Inclusion maps onto deduction from containment, such as a part within a whole. Presumption resembles what logicians call entailment, and in other uses inference to the best explanation, both treated as reasoning. Learning from what did not happen is now discussed as negative evidence, and most see it as inference. Whether we directly perceive an absence, such as an empty chair, is still debated. On tradition, current work on testimony stresses that a claim's worth depends on whether its source can be checked. Rumour with no traceable speaker is weak testimony, not a separate source. Whether any list of sources is complete remains an open question.
