Sound is not eternal, because it has a beginning, because it is grasped by a sense, and because it is spoken of the way made things are.
The question is whether sound comes into being and passes away, or is something permanent that is only uncovered when we hear it. For the Nyaya, sound is not eternal, and Gautama gives three reasons. First, it has a beginning. Vatsyayana reads 'beginning' as cause: sound arises when things strike or come apart, and whatever has a cause is seen to perish. Second, it is sensed, taken in when it reaches the ear. Vatsyayana uses this to rule out mere revealing. A distant listener hears an axe on wood after the blow is over, so the blow cannot be uncovering a sound that sits beside it. It starts a chain of sounds that travels to the ear. Third, we talk of sound the way we talk of made things, as loud or faint, just as we speak of strong or mild pleasure and pain. A loud drum drowns a soft string, which only makes sense if the sounds themselves differ. So sound is produced, not unveiled.
Picture a kitchen at night. Switch on a lamp and a chair appears, but the chair was there all along; the light only shows it. Then a kettle starts to whistle. Nothing was waiting in the dark to be lit up. The whistle begins with the boiling and stops when the boiling ends. The Nyaya puts sound with the kettle, not the chair.
Physics sides with the Nyaya on the main point. Acoustics describes sound as a pressure wave set off by a vibrating body. It spreads, weakens and fades, and a louder wave can mask a quieter one. Vatsyayana's chain of sounds travelling to the ear loosely resembles propagation, though the Nyaya had no account of vibrating air. Modern linguistics reframes the old quarrel. The type-token distinction separates each spoken utterance, which is plainly made, from the word as an abstract pattern, which is largely what defenders of eternal sound cared about. As logic, the second reason is the weakest. Being perceived does not by itself show that a thing is impermanent. A sound inference needs a sign with no counterexample, and that gap is pressed next.
