Meaning · English
But the meaning of a word is the individual thing, its shape, and the universal kind, all three together.
The question is simple to ask and hard to settle. When someone says 'cow', what does the word point to? This particular animal? The visible form that makes it look like a cow? Or cowness, the kind shared by every cow? The preceding sutras test each answer alone. Here Gautama gives the Nyaya's settled position: all three at once. Vyakti is the individual, this one cow. Akriti is the shape, the arrangement of parts by which we spot it. Jati is the universal, the shared kind. Vatsyayana explains that the little word 'but' signals a qualification. Which of the three leads is not fixed. When a speaker means one cow as opposed to others, the individual leads and the other two support it. When no particular one is meant and the talk is general, the universal leads. He says the shape can lead too, and leaves its case to be worked out. So a word carries all three, and the context decides which one is in front.
Picture a chess knight. 'Pass me the knight' asks for that wooden piece by your elbow. 'A knight moves in an L' speaks about every knight in every set. And you knew which piece to hand over because of its carved horse head. One word, three jobs: the piece is the individual, the horse head is the shape, and the role is the universal.
Linguists today draw a close distinction between specific reference ('the dog bit me') and generic reference ('the dog is a mammal'), and they treat context as what tells them apart. That matches the Nyaya point that the same word can lead with the individual or the kind. Philosophers since Peirce separate tokens from types, which is near to individual and universal. Cognitive science adds that we often recognise categories by typical outline and features, which gives the role of shape some support. What stays open is whether universals are real things in the world. The Nyaya says they are. Nominalists in the West and the Buddhist logicians in India deny it, treating kinds as names or mental exclusions. Modern philosophy has not settled that debate.
