One Knower, Two Senses

Because one and the same object is grasped by seeing and by touching.
The question behind this sutra is old and simple: is there a self that knows, or only the senses doing their separate jobs? Nyaya answers with an ordinary moment. You see a cup, then you reach out and touch it, and you recognise that the thing you saw is the thing you are touching. Two senses, one object, joined in a single act of recognition. Vatsyayana, the school's first commentator, sets out the reasoning. The eye knows only colour and shape. It never feels. The skin knows only touch. It never sees. Neither sense has the other's report, so neither can say that these two are the same thing. A mere bundle of senses cannot do it either, because inside a bundle each member still holds only its own report. Something must receive both reports and link them. For the Nyaya, that one knower is the atman, the self, distinct from the senses it works through.
Picture a building with two security cameras, one in the lobby and one in the car park. Each records only its own feed. Neither camera can notice that the man in the red coat passed through both. Only the guard at the desk, watching both screens, can say it is the same man. The cameras are the senses. The guard is the self.
Cognitive science agrees on the observation. People recognise by touch an object they have only seen, and the brain combines sight and touch into one experience. This is studied as multisensory integration, and the wider puzzle of how separate signals become one experience is called the binding problem. Where Nyaya and today's mainstream part ways is the conclusion. Neuroscience places this integration in brain regions that receive input from several senses. On that view a physical system can do the linking without a separate self, and functionalists in philosophy of mind would say so. Hume's bundle theory and the Buddhist no-self teaching reject a further knower. Kant also held that unified experience needs a single subject, though he denied this proves a soul-substance. Whether integration explains the felt unity of experience, or only its mechanics, is still open.
