Memory comes from attention, grouping, repetition, sign, mark, likeness, ownership, support, dependent, relation, sequence, separation, joint-work, rivalry, enhancement, gain, covering, pleasure, pain, desire, aversion, fear, need, action, love, merit, demerit.
What makes a memory surface? For the Nyaya, a memory needs a trigger, and Gautama lists the triggers. Vatsyayana's commentary supplies examples. Attention: holding the mind on what you want back. Grouping: things learned together cue each other. Repetition: going over something leaves a lasting trace. A sign recalls what goes with it, as smoke recalls fire. A mark recalls its owner, as a brand on cattle recalls their clan. Likeness works the way a portrait recalls its sitter. Ownership links owner and possession. Support and dependent link a headman and those under him. Relation links teacher and pupil. Sequence recalls the next task. Separation recalls the one we lost. A joint work recalls a co-worker, and rivalry recalls the opponent. Enhancement recalls whoever improved us, and gain recalls whoever gave or will give. A covering recalls what it holds, as a sheath recalls its sword. Pleasure and pain recall their cause. Desire, aversion and fear recall their objects. Need recalls what meets it, an action its maker, and love the beloved. Merit, Vatsyayana says, brings back past lives and helps retain what was learned; demerit recalls what once caused pain. He adds that these are examples, not a complete list. So memory is not random. It travels along links.
1. Tonight, before sleep, spend two minutes going back over your day. For each memory that surfaces, notice which link carried it: a likeness, a place, a feeling or a person. 2. Pick one thing you keep forgetting, such as a name. Say it aloud three times now and once more this evening. 3. Group tomorrow's three errands into one short phrase, and say it once, in order. 4. When a worry or a wish keeps returning today, quietly name the thing it keeps pulling into mind.
Cognitive psychology would recognise most of this list. Memories are thought to come back through retrieval cues, and a cue works best when it was linked to the memory at the time of learning. Attention at learning, repetition, and grouping items into chunks all strengthen recall. Resemblance, contiguity and cause were Hume's principles of association, and modern network models describe recall as activation spreading along links. Emotion, fear especially, makes events easier to remember, and present mood tilts which memories come up. Two points part company with today's view. Merit and demerit, understood as a moral residue that prompts memory, have no counterpart in current science. And the picture of a stored trace waiting to be triggered sits uneasily with the modern finding that recall rebuilds a memory each time and can alter it.
