Because cognitions do not arise simultaneously, the mind is one.
Nyaya asks how many inner instruments of knowing a person has. The self, atman, is the knower. The senses reach out to colour, sound, touch and the rest. Between them Nyaya places manas, the mind: an inner organ that must link with a sense before any knowing happens. The sutra claims that each person has a single manas. Its reason is that cognitions never arise together. Vatsyayana sharpens this. One eye seeing one thing at a time proves nothing, since any instrument yields one result per use. The telling fact lies across the senses. Sight, hearing and touch all have objects before them, yet we know those objects one after another. If there were many minds, each could pair with a different sense at the same moment. Then several cognitions would arise at once. They do not. So for Nyaya, knowledge comes in a sequence, through one inner gate per person.
Picture a station with several entrance corridors but a single ticket turnstile. Crowds arrive from every side at once, yet people click through one at a time. The corridors are the senses, each bringing its own stream. The turnstile is manas. However much is waiting, only what passes through it becomes something actually known, and it passes in order.
Cognitive psychology has its own version of this observation. In dual-task experiments, when two demands each need a response, the second response is often delayed. Researchers describe this as a central bottleneck of attention. Global workspace theories in philosophy of mind also picture conscious contents being broadcast one at a time. So the serial character of focused awareness holds up well. The picture strains beneath awareness. The brain processes sight, sound and touch in parallel and merges them before we notice anything. Nyaya's manas has no clear match in anatomy. It works as a functional posit, not an organ anyone has located. Two questions remain open: whether experience is truly serial or only feels so, and whether attention is one resource or several.
