The Spinning Firebrand

Nyaya Sutras 3.2.58

Meaning · English

Their apparent togetherness comes from the mind's swift movement, as when a whirled firebrand is seen as a circle.

The question is this. If the mind, which Nyaya calls manas, the inner instrument linking each sense to the self, handles one thing at a time, why do we seem to see, hear and feel several things at once? Gautama answers with a picture. Whirl a burning stick, an alatacakra, and you see a ring of fire. The stick is only ever at one point, but it moves so fast that the gaps vanish. For the Nyaya, experience works the same way. The mind moves quickly from sense to sense, and the sequence goes unnoticed. Vatsyayana explains that the order is real but not grasped. He gives two supports. Looking inward, we find that knowings through different senses arrive by turns. And grasping a sentence takes many steps in order: hearing each sound, joining sounds into a word, recalling its meaning, joining words, then taking in the whole. All of it feels instant. So no case of truly simultaneous knowing is beyond doubt, and nothing forces us to posit many minds in one body.

1. Tonight, in a dark room, swing a small torch in a quick circle for a few seconds. Notice that you see a ring, then slow down until the ring breaks into a moving dot. 2. During one conversation today, listen for about a minute to how sounds become words and words become a sentence you understand. 3. At your next meal, spend thirty seconds trying to attend fully to taste and to the sounds around you at once. Notice whether your attention actually switches back and forth.

Cognitive science partly agrees and partly complicates the picture. Deliberate attention does appear to have a narrow channel. Research on task switching and dual-task interference shows that doing two demanding things at once usually means alternating between them, with costs we often fail to notice, which fits the Nyaya claim well. But much processing runs in parallel below awareness. Early vision and hearing work simultaneously, and the brain actively combines inputs from different senses. The firebrand ring itself is now explained mainly by the visual system blending signals over short stretches of time, not by a mind hopping between senses. Speech comprehension is likewise understood as incremental and predictive, with several levels operating together rather than in strict order. Whether conscious experience is one serial stream or a construction stitched from parallel processes remains an open question in philosophy of mind.
