Pleasure Between the Pains
Nyaya Sutras 4.1.55
Meaning · English
Because it is bound up with affliction of many kinds, the coming-to-be of a birth is pain itself. Yet this does not deny pleasure, for pleasure too arises in the intervals.
The question is simple. If Nyaya counts birth as pain, does it claim life holds no pleasure at all? The first line states the hard claim. Janma, birth, means the coming into being of a body, senses and cognitions. Vatsyayana explains that this arising is always tied to badhana, affliction, in many grades. It is harshest for beings in hell, middling for animals, lighter for humans, and lighter still for gods and for those free of passion. Since no form of birth escapes it, Nyaya holds that one should label even pleasure, and the body and senses that deliver it, as pain. That label breeds disenchantment, disenchantment cuts craving, and with craving gone one is freed from all pain. He compares this to someone who knows that milk mixed with poison is poison, does not take it, and so escapes the pain of death. The second line blocks the obvious misreading. Calling birth pain does not deny pleasure, because pleasure really does arise in the gaps between afflictions. Vatsyayana adds that each embodied person feels it directly, so it cannot be argued away. The claim concerns how to regard pleasure, not whether it exists.
Think of a long hospital stay. There are good hours in it: a visitor, a hot meal, sun through the window in the afternoon. Nobody calls those hours fake. Yet no patient mistakes the ward for home. The good hours are real and they sit inside the stay. The stay as a whole is still something the patient wants to leave. That is how Nyaya places pleasure inside an embodied life.
Two things here meet modern discussion. One is the claim about value. Schopenhauer argued that pleasure is mostly relief from pain, and some recent philosophers argue that coming into existence is a net harm. Both views are contested, and many hold that pleasure is a real positive state. Nyaya sits in between: pleasure is real, but it is framed by pain. Psychology offers partial support for that framing. Hedonic adaptation is well established, meaning good things tend to fade, often back toward a baseline, and the gap between wanting something and enjoying it is widely discussed. The second point is about evidence. Vatsyayana treats first-person experience of pleasure as undeniable. That matches a widely held, though not universal, view in philosophy of mind that what is directly felt cannot be argued out of existence. Whether life is good on balance remains open.
