Freedom as Dreamless Sleep
Nyaya Sutras 4.1.63
Meaning · English
As one in deep sleep, seeing no dream, is free of afflictions, so is final release.
The question behind the sutra is whether a person could ever be wholly free of the afflictions, the kleshas: the grip of wanting and the pull of pleasure and pain. A doubter says the afflictions run on without a break, so release is impossible. Gautama answers by pointing to a state everyone already enters, where they plainly lapse. In deep sleep with no dream, nothing is wanted, nothing hurts, nothing pleases. For the Nyaya, apavarga, final release from the round of births and pain, is like that. Vatsyayana spells out the step. In dreamless sleep the chain of attachment is cut, and so is the chain of pleasure and pain. In release they are cut the same way. He adds that knowers of Brahman, that is, the Vedic sages, describe the freed self in these terms. So the argument rests on experience: a state without afflictions is real, because a nightly version of it already exists. It follows that release is not a heaven of enjoyments. It is the whole chain stopping, the pleasant links included.
Pull the plug on a radio. It does not move to a quieter station or play softer songs. The songs you love go silent along with the static you hate, because the set is no longer receiving anything. Release, as the Nyaya pictures it, is the plug pulled out. It does not swap bad signals for good ones. The receiving of both ends.
Sleep research partly supports the observation. People woken from deep non-REM sleep often report little or no mental content, though some report faint thoughts, and dreaming is not limited to REM sleep. So a stretch of night with no felt wanting or suffering is a fair description of ordinary experience. Philosophy of mind leaves the harder point open. Is anyone present in dreamless sleep, or is there simply no experience? Some scholars of consciousness argue that a thin awareness persists, and others deny it. A second gap is logical. The analogy shows that the afflictions can pause. It does not show that they can stop permanently, because sleep ends. A modern reader can also ask whether a state with no experience at all is good for the one who is in it. That question of value is still argued.
