Clear Sight Undoes Ego

Nyaya Sutras 4.2.1

Meaning · English

Knowing the truth about the things that set off the faults brings the false sense of 'I' to an end.

What actually ends our suffering? Nyaya's answer turns on five terms. The doshas, or faults, are the school's name for liking, loathing and confusion, the pulls that drive us to act. Their nimitta, or occasions, are the things those pulls fasten on. Tattva-jnana is knowing those things as they really are. Ahankara here is not pride. It is the mistaken sense of 'I' and 'mine', such as taking the body or its feelings to be oneself. Nivritti is its ending. The sutra claims that true knowledge, tattva-jnana, ends the false sense of self, ahankara. Vatsyayana explains how. The occasions are the very list of things the book set out to examine, from the body through to pain, because false knowledge is always about them. True knowledge about those same things pushes the false sense of self aside, since two opposite judgements cannot both stand about one object. Then the chain unwinds. Without the error, the faults fade. Without the faults, driven action, rebirth and pain fall away. He adds that this restates the book's teaching rather than adding a new one.

Walk into a dark bedroom and a coat hung on a chair looks like someone standing there. Your heart jumps and you freeze. Flick on the light and the fright drains away. You did not argue with it. You now see that same coat correctly. The false 'I' is the misread shape, and the faults are the fright it sets off.

Today's nearest discussion is the self-model in cognitive science and the part beliefs play in emotion. Cognitive therapy agrees with part of the claim: how we construe things shapes what we crave and fear, and correcting a mistaken construal often softens the reaction. Vatsyayana's key step is shakier. He holds that two opposite judgements about one object cannot coexist. Yet visual illusions keep looking wrong after we know better, and feelings often outlast a corrected belief, so knowing is not always undoing. Nyaya's wider claim also rests on a real, enduring self distinct from body and mind. Humean and Buddhist bundle views deny such a self, and neuroscience neither proves nor rules it out. Whether a lasting insight can uproot desire altogether, rather than dampen it, remains untested.
