The Idealist's Challenge

This sense that we have means of knowing and things to know is like the sense of things seen in a dream.
The question is whether our ways of knowing reach anything real. A pramana is a means of valid knowledge, such as perception or inference. A prameya is whatever such a means reveals: a pot, a person, a fact. Abhimana is the felt conviction that something is really there. The opponent (often read as a Buddhist idealist or sceptic) lines these up against a dream. Vatsyayana explains it plainly. In a dream there are no objects, yet the conviction of objects still arises. In the same way, he reports the opponent as saying, there are no means of knowing and no things known, yet the conviction of both arises. Spelled out, the argument runs in steps: dreams show that conviction can occur with nothing behind it. So conviction alone cannot prove anything is behind it. Waking conviction is the same kind of thing. What follows is severe. If the objection stands, the whole Nyaya project of sorting good knowledge from bad has nothing to work on. This is the opponent's view, set out so that it can be answered.
Your phone buzzes against your leg. You reach into your pocket, and the phone is on the table across the room. The buzz felt exactly as real as a call. That gap is the objection. A sensation can carry full conviction with nothing behind it. The idealist asks why every sensation should not be like that one.
This is close kin to Descartes' dream argument and to today's brain-in-a-vat puzzle. Cognitive science agrees with the starting point. Perception is something the brain builds, and dreams, hallucinations and phantom sensations show that vivid experience can occur with no matching object. Where the argument weakens is the jump from 'sometimes' to 'always'. Waking experience is stable and shared, it can be checked by other senses and other people, and it lets us predict what happens next. Dreams lack all of these. Most philosophers today hold some form of realism, often as the best explanation of that stability. Still, no knock-down refutation of external-world skepticism is generally accepted. The worry Gautama records remains an open problem in epistemology, not a settled one.
