Concentration That Reveals Truth

Through repeated practice of a particular kind of concentration.
Nyaya has just argued that mistaken beliefs are real and can be removed. That leaves a question: how does true knowledge actually arise in someone who seeks it? Gautama's answer is short. It comes through repeated practice of a particular kind of samadhi, which means focused, absorbed concentration. Vatsyayana explains what makes it particular. First, the mind (manas, for Nyaya the inner instrument that links the senses to the self) is drawn back from the senses. Second, it is held there by steady, deliberate effort. Third, it is joined with the self. Fourth, the whole act is shaped by one aim: wanting to know how things really are. While that state lasts, Vatsyayana says, no cognitions of sense objects arise. Repeated again and again, the practice lets understanding of the real (tattva) arise. For the Nyaya, then, clear knowledge is not won by argument alone. It also needs a trained, quieted mind aimed at truth.
1. This morning, sit for ten minutes in a quiet corner and pick one question you genuinely want to understand, such as why a recent disagreement went wrong. 2. Close your eyes. Let sounds and sights pass without following them. When your attention drifts to one, bring it back to the question. 3. Afterwards, write down in two or three lines whatever became clearer. 4. Repeat at the same time tomorrow, and notice whether returning to the question gets easier.
The closest modern discussion is the psychology of attention. Cognitive science agrees that attention is limited and selective. When focus is held on one task, much incoming sensory information is processed less or goes unnoticed. It also agrees that the ability to sustain focus and return from distraction improves with practice, which fits the sutra's stress on repetition. Studies of meditation report changes in attention and mind-wandering, though the findings vary in strength and quality. Nyaya goes further than evidence can follow when it claims that this practice yields knowledge of reality itself, not just sharper thinking. An empiricist would ask how such insight could be checked by others. Nyaya would reply that its pramanas, the means of valid knowledge, still test what arises. Whether disciplined inner focus can reveal truths, rather than only clear the way to them, remains open.
