For that, take up the science of knowing, practise it steadily, and talk it over with those who know it. Seek such talk with students, teacher, fellow students and distinguished seekers of the good, all free of envy.

The question behind the sutra is practical. If true knowledge is what frees a person, how does anyone actually get it? Nyaya answers with three things. First, grahana, taking the teaching in. Vatsyayana explains that 'knowledge' here names the science of the self (atmavidya-shastra), and taking it in means learning that teaching and keeping it in memory. Second, abhyasa, practice. He glosses it as continual study, listening and reflecting. Third, samvada, discussion with those who know the subject. Its purpose, he says, is to ripen understanding, and ripening has three parts: doubts are cut away, points not yet understood become clear, and conclusions already reached are confirmed. He calls samvada talk on agreed terms. It is a shared search, not a contest. The second line names the partners: one's own students, one's teacher, fellow students, and other distinguished people who are also seeking the good. One condition covers every one of them. They must be anasuyu, free of envy, so that the talk serves understanding rather than rivalry.

1. This evening, pick one idea you are learning. Read about it for 15 minutes, then write it in your own words without looking. 2. Tomorrow morning, spend five minutes recalling it from memory before you check your notes. 3. Write down one doubt you still have about it. 4. This week, ask a teacher, colleague or fellow learner about that doubt for ten minutes. Listen to understand, not to win. 5. Afterwards, note which of the three things happened: a doubt resolved, something new understood, or your view confirmed.

Much of this sits well with today's learning research. Retrieval practice, spaced review and explaining an idea in your own words are well-established ways to make knowledge last, which matches grahana and abhyasa. Discussion helps too. Explaining to peers and being questioned exposes gaps that solitary reading hides. Psychology also supports the envy condition in general terms. When people argue to win or feel threatened by a rival, motivated reasoning hardens positions. Groups that feel safe to disagree tend to correct errors better. Social epistemology, the modern study of knowledge as something we build together through testimony and disagreement, takes the same broad view. What has no scientific test is the sutra's larger goal. Whether such knowledge brings liberation is a claim about the self that lies outside what learning research can settle.
