To guard a firm grasp of what is real, wrangling and cavil may be used, just as a covering of thorny branches is laid round sprouting seeds to guard them as they grow.
The question behind the sutra: Nyaya prizes honest enquiry, so may a student ever argue unfairly? The answer is a limited yes. Two kinds of debate are named. Jalpa, wrangling, is arguing to win, using any move that scores, including quibbles and traps. Vitanda, cavil, only attacks the other side and never states a position of its own. Both fall short of fair discussion. For the Nyaya, they still have one proper use: protecting a hold on the truth that is real but still fragile. Vatsyayana explains who this is for. It is for people in whom full knowledge of the truth has not yet arisen, whose faults are not yet gone, and who are still working toward it. As the commentary goes on to suggest, a skilled opponent could talk such a person out of a sound conviction they cannot yet defend. So the tougher tactics serve as a guard. They are not a way of finding truth. By implication, once understanding is complete, the need for them falls away.
Picture a child's arm in a plaster cast. The bone underneath is already mending correctly, but one knock in the playground could undo the work. The cast is stiff, clumsy and no part of the healing itself. In six weeks it comes off. Wrangling plays that role: rigid outside armour around an understanding that is right but not yet set.
Modern critical thinking would recognise the worry. People who hold a true belief without knowing the reasons can be argued out of it by a fluent speaker. Plato's quarrel with the Sophists turned on this, and social psychology's inoculation research suggests that people resist manipulation better when they have rehearsed counter-arguments in advance. On method, the sutra meets resistance. Critical rationalism, the view associated with Popper, holds that a belief earns trust by facing criticism. Shielding it with debating tricks would make a false belief just as hard to dislodge. Today's study of informal fallacies treats quibbling as a fault, whatever its purpose. Still open is the question the sutra raises: whether a learner may defend a conviction they cannot yet justify, and who decides it is the true one.
