Bhagavad Gita 3.26
Meaning · English
The wise one, steady in knowledge, should not create discord in the minds of the ignorant who are attached to fruitive action. Himself performing all prescribed actions properly, he should inspire them to carry out their own duties as well.
Three terms carry the verse. Buddhi is the intellect, the part of the mind that weighs and decides, and bheda is a split or breach. Buddhi-bheda is a crack in someone's settled understanding. Sanga is clinging, so a karma-sangin is a person who clings to the results of what they do. Yukta means joined or steady, one whose knowledge is not just heard but lived. Krishna tells Arjuna that the wise person does not go around cracking the understanding of those who still work for rewards. Take away their reasons for acting and they may not have anything to replace them with. They may simply stop, and a stopped worker serves no one. So the wise one does something quieter. He does all the prescribed work himself, and does it well, and his example draws others into action. The reason Krishna gives comes from the verses before: the world is held together by work, and the wise act for its welfare. Shankara reads this as saying that even a knower of the Self, who has no duty left of his own, should act so that others are not unsettled. Ramanuja takes the wise one to be a practitioner of karma yoga who leads the less ready along the same path. Madhva stresses that the wise act in the knowledge that God is the ruler of all action, and so set the pattern. What is asked of the listener is patience, and work done properly in plain view.
An experienced cook stands beside a nervous apprentice who has learned only one recipe. The cook does not mock it or throw it out. He keeps chopping, stirring and tasting beside him, and the apprentice slowly picks up better habits. The cook is the wise one, and the apprentice is the person still working for the reward.
1. Choose one person near you, at home or at work, who does their tasks mainly for praise or pay. 2. For this week, do not argue with their reasons. Do your own share of the work carefully and completely, in the same room where they can see it. 3. When you feel the urge to correct their motives out loud, wait a full day first. 4. At the end of the week, write one line about what changed in them, and one about what changed in you.
An elder sister is in the kitchen at five in the morning before a family wedding. A younger cousin is grumbling over the chopping and counting who has done more. She has a view of her own about work and reward, and the cousin's complaints invite her to share it. Krishna's teaching changes the moment in steps. First, she notices the pull to lecture and lets it pass. Second, she sees that the cousin is working for approval, and that this is where the cousin stands today. Third, she keeps chopping, carefully and without complaint, and hands over the next vegetable. The work gets done, and the cousin may notice how she goes about it. Ordinary experience bears out one part of this: people resist being corrected in front of others far more than they resist watching someone work steadily. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that the cousin will change, that the morning will be easy, or that the sister will feel no irritation. It promises only a way of acting that does not add confusion to the day.
