Who Really Acts

Bhagavad Gita 3.27

Meaning · English

All actions are carried out in every way by the three modes of material nature. One whose self is bewildered by ego, taking itself to be the body, thinks: I am the doer.

Three words carry the verse. Prakriti is material nature, the working world of body, mind and circumstance. Guna is a mode or strand of that nature, and Krishna speaks of three. Ahankara is the ego, literally the 'I-maker', the habit of saying 'I' over whatever happens. Krishna tells Arjuna that every kind of activity is carried out by the modes of nature. The one who is bewildered, who has taken the body for the self, still thinks, 'I am the doer.' So the verse names a mistake of ownership. Action goes on through nature's strands, yet the ego signs its name under all of it. Krishna gives the reason by pointing at the bewilderment: the ego confuses the self with the body, and so claims what nature is doing. This matters to Arjuna because he is about to act, and he is wavering under the weight of being the sole author of a war. The verse asks the listener to notice how automatically 'I' attaches itself to each deed. Shankara reads the verse as separating the unchanging self from nature's activity. Ramanuja reads it as showing that the self depends on the Lord and is not the independent agent it imagines. Madhva stresses that the soul acts only under the Lord's control.

A boat drifts on a current while a passenger on deck grips the rail and insists he is steering. The river, wind and rudder are moving the boat along. The passenger is the ego claiming authorship of a journey that nature's strands are carrying out.

1. Today, pick one ordinary task, such as cooking a meal or answering messages, and do it for ten minutes. 2. While you work, listen for the sentence 'I am doing this' or 'I did that well.' Each time it appears, just notice it. 3. Notice what else was acting: hunger, habit, the weather, what you were taught, the tools in your hands. Name two of them. 4. In the evening, recall one moment when you felt sole author of a success or a failure. Ask how much of it was yours alone.

A cook finishes a double shift at a busy kitchen, and the owner thanks her alone for a flawless service. She feels pride rising, then dread that tomorrow she must be that good again. The verse would turn her attention in steps. She was tired, the ingredients were fresh, the team worked in rhythm, and years of practice moved her hands. Krishna calls these the working of nature's strands, and the 'I' comes afterward to claim it. Seeing this, she can accept thanks lightly and take a bad night just as lightly. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: how we feel and perform shifts with sleep, hunger and company, far more than our sense of personal control admits. The verse does not promise that she will stop feeling pride or worry, and it does not excuse carelessness, since she still has to show up and cook. It does not treat exhaustion as a mere idea either, and if she is unwell she needs rest or a doctor.
