Seeing the Two Apart

Bhagavad Gita 3.28

Meaning · English

But the knower of the Truth, mighty-armed one, understands how the modes and their works are distinct. Knowing that the senses and mind, themselves modes of nature, are simply moving among the objects of the senses, he does not become attached.

Krishna calls Arjuna mighty-armed and then describes the tattva-vit, one who knows the Truth as it is. Such a person tells apart two things: guna and karma. Guna means a strand or mode of nature. Here it covers the senses and mind, and also the things they meet. Karma means action. Krishna says the knower sees that the working parts of a person, eye, ear, mind, are only meeting what they are made to meet: sights, sounds, tastes, thoughts. Nature's parts are busy among nature's objects. Having seen this, the knower does not cling. The reason comes from the verse before it: the bewildered person says 'I am the doer' and so gets hooked on every result. Seeing the machinery as machinery loosens that grip. Krishna asks Arjuna to see this way, and then to act. Shankara reads the knower as one who sees the Self as a silent witness, apart from all action. Ramanuja reads it as the self knowing itself to be distinct from the body and its modes, while still doing its duty. Madhva reads it as seeing that nature's workings depend on God, so no one owns them.

A pressure cooker whistles on the stove. The cook does not think 'I am whistling.' Heat, water and steam are doing what they do, and the cook simply turns the flame down. Senses and mind meeting their objects are the steam and the whistle; the knower is the cook who watches without claiming the sound.

1. Pick one ordinary pull today, such as a phone buzzing, a smell from a kitchen or a sweet on the table. 2. When it arrives, name it silently in a plain sentence: 'The eyes are meeting the screen' or 'The nose is meeting the smell.' Do not add 'I want' or 'I'm weak.' 3. Wait about ten slow breaths before you decide anything. 4. Notice whether the pull rises, stays or fades, and whether you chose differently than usual.

A man walks past a street stall at six in the evening, hungry after a long day, with a doctor's advice to cut sugar still fresh. The smell of hot jalebis reaches him, his mouth waters, and a thought arrives: 'I want those.' Usually he hears it as one voice saying 'I am hungry, I am weak.' The verse, as Krishna gives it, suggests another step. The nose met the smell, the body began its routine of appetite, and the mind produced its wish. These are nature's parts at work among nature's objects, and none of them has to be taken as his own verdict. With that gap, he can walk on, or buy one piece and eat it slowly, without being dragged by the first reflex. Ordinary experience agrees that hunger and tiredness make cravings louder, so noticing them as events in the body helps. The verse does not promise that the craving vanishes, and it does not replace medical care for a condition such as diabetes. It speaks to how he stands in relation to the pull, not to whether the pull arises.
