Bhagavad Gita 3.29
Meaning · English
Bewildered by the modes of material nature, people grow attached to the results of the modes' actions. Those who know the whole should not unsettle these dull-witted ones who lack that knowledge.
Three words carry the verse. Prakriti is nature, the stuff the body, senses and mind are made of. Guna is a strand or mode of that nature, the forces that drive what we do. Karma is action, and what a person gets attached to here is the results of action. Krishna tells Arjuna that people deluded by these modes cling to what their actions bring, because they take themselves to be the doer. They have partial knowledge at best. The one who sees the whole, who knows that nature's modes are doing the work, is told not to shake them loose. The reason follows from the verses before it. Such a person is attached because that is where they stand, and pulling the ground from under them does not give them the knowledge to stand elsewhere. A knower who preaches at them may only leave them without action and without understanding. So Krishna asks the knower for restraint and patience. Shankara reads it this way: the knower of the Self should not disturb the unknowing from their duties. Ramanuja takes the knower to be someone who understands the self and should keep such people steady in their work. Madhva stresses that the true doer behind nature is the Lord, and the knower holds this without pressing it on others.
A father runs beside his daughter's bicycle, training wheels still on. He sees she is ready for none of it yet, so he does not tear them off in the street. The training wheels are the clinging to results. The father is the one who knows more and waits, because a wobble now would only teach her to be afraid.
1. Today, notice one person near you who is anxious about an outcome, such as a result, a payment or an opinion, and whom you would like to correct. 2. Before speaking, ask yourself whether they have asked for your view. If not, hold it back for ten minutes and listen. 3. Help with the actual task in front of them, a small practical thing. 4. Tonight, note in one line what changed in the room when you did not correct them.
A man comes home from a week-long retreat, calm and full of ideas. At dinner his uncle frets about the shop's takings and the rent due on Friday. The nephew begins explaining that worry over results is an illusion. The uncle goes quiet, then irritable, and grips the subject harder. Ordinary experience bears this out: a person who feels their footing attacked tends to hold on tighter. Krishna's counsel would change the moment in steps. The nephew first sees that his uncle's concern is real work done for a family, not a mistake. He asks about the ledger and sits with him over it. He lets his own understanding show in how steadily he behaves, and says nothing of it until the uncle asks. The verse does not promise that the uncle will stop worrying, or that the rent will be paid. It also does not say the knower must hide what he knows forever, only that he must not force it on someone not ready.
