Meaning · English
Place all your works in me, with your thoughts resting on God. Free from hankering for results and from any sense of ownership, fight, with the mental fever gone.
Three words carry the verse. Karma is action, every task a person does. Sannyasa, here rendered as renouncing completely, is giving something up by handing it over, not by walking away. Jvara is fever, and Krishna uses it for the restless heat of a mind that runs ahead to outcomes. The plain sense: Krishna tells Arjuna to hand every action to him, keep his thoughts resting on God, stop hungering for results, stop saying 'mine' about the work, and then fight. The action stays. What goes is the clutching. Krishna's reason sits in the verses before it: people who are deluded cling to the results of action, and that clinging is what binds them. A mind fixed on gain or loss is feverish, and the fever is the suffering. So he asks Arjuna to do the whole duty and let go of the ownership of its fruit. Every clause is an instruction about the inner side of the deed, not the deed itself. Shankara reads the handing-over as acting like a servant of the Lord, with the knowledge that the Self is not the doer. Ramanuja reads it as surrender to the Supreme Person, who dwells within the doer and directs the act. Madhva reads it as offering works to Vishnu, who is wholly independent, while all else depends on him.
A postman climbs a long hill with a bag of letters. Every letter is carefully carried, and none is his. He does not open them or fret over the news inside. He walks, hands each one over, and goes home light. The postman is the worker. The letters are the results, which pass through him to someone else.
1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as cooking a meal, answering a hard message, or sweeping a floor. 2. Before starting, say quietly, 'This is offered,' and name whom you offer it to, as you understand them. 3. While working, notice each time your mind jumps ahead to praise, payment or result. Each time, bring it back to the next small movement of the task. 4. When it is done, leave it alone for five minutes. Do not replay it or check how it landed.
A woman in her forties sits in a parked car outside the licence office, waiting for her third driving test. Her heart is racing. She is replaying the last failure, the examiner's pen, what her family will say. Krishna's words ask what the work actually is. It is mirror, signal, gear, the next turn. The result belongs to the examiner, the traffic and the morning, not to her. Handing it over, as the text teaches, is what cools the fever. Her attention comes back from the imagined verdict to the road in front of her. Ordinary experience agrees that dread about the outcome crowds out attention to the task itself. She may still fail. The verse does not promise a pass, and it does not remove the disappointment if one comes. It also does not replace help where help is needed: a racing heart that will not settle, again and again, is for a doctor to look at, not something to be handled by resolve alone. What it offers is a way to do the next hour of work with the heat taken out of it.
