Faith Free of Faultfinding
Bhagavad Gita 3.31
Meaning · English
Those human beings who constantly abide by these teachings of mine, with deep faith and free from cavilling, they too become free from the bondage of karma.
Three words carry this. Shraddha is faith, a settled trust that lets a person act on what they have heard. Anasuya is the opposite of cavilling: the habit of hunting for a flaw in a teacher or a teaching before trying it. Karma is action, and also the chain of result and consequence that action leaves behind. Krishna tells Arjuna that people who keep to his teaching steadily, trusting it and not picking at it, are released from that chain. The word 'also' matters. Krishna has just told Arjuna to offer every act to him and fight without craving or ownership. Here he adds that freedom is not only for those who grasp all of it. Ordinary human beings who keep at it, day after day, are freed as well. The reason is practical. A teaching that is argued with and then dropped changes nothing, while one that is trusted and practised does the loosening. Shankara reads the verse as promising release even to those who only follow with faith and no fault-finding. Ramanuja takes the teaching to be the way of action offered to the Lord, and the faithful as freed through it. Madhva places the same freedom in devotion to the Lord as supreme. All three keep the two conditions: faith, and no cavilling.
A young cook follows her aunt's recipe for dal. She does not understand why the cumin goes in before the onion, and she does not argue. She does it every time, in order, and the dal turns out right. Steady practice with trust and without nitpicking is what the verse asks, and the good result follows from it.
1. Choose one teaching from this chapter that you already accept, such as doing a task and letting go of the result. 2. Practise it for one ordinary task today: a call, a meal, a bill. 3. When your mind starts arguing against it, note the argument in a word or two and go on with the task. 4. Repeat tomorrow at the same hour. Notice how much easier the second day is than the first.
A man sits on the edge of his bed three weeks after knee surgery, holding the exercise sheet the physiotherapist gave him. Each morning he wonders whether the third exercise is really needed, whether the number of repetitions is right, whether his cousin's different advice is better. He spends twenty minutes weighing it all and then does half of it. The verse would change the morning in steps. He decides once, with reasonable trust, that the sheet comes from someone who knows the knee. He does the exercises in order, every day, at the same time. When a doubt rises, he lets it pass and carries on, and he saves real questions for the next appointment. Ordinary experience confirms that a plan re-argued every morning wears a person out before it is begun. The verse does not promise that the knee heals faster, or that doubt never returns. It does not replace the physiotherapist or the doctor. Krishna's promise is about freedom from the bondage of karma, and he says it in his own terms: a steady, trusting practice, free of cavilling, is the way there.
