Meaning · English
Those who cavil at this teaching of mine and do not follow it, know them to be deluded in every kind of knowledge, ruined, and without discrimination.
Three words carry the verse. Abhyasuya is cavilling: picking at a teaching to find fault, instead of weighing it. Vimudha is deluded, a mind so muddled that it cannot sort one thing from another. Chetas is the faculty that notices and discriminates, so achetasah means someone who has lost that faculty. Krishna tells Arjuna that people who carp at his teaching and do not live by it are confused in every field of knowledge, and are ruined. The reason is in the last word. Faultfinding is a habit of the mind, and it does not stay on one subject. A person who has trained to dismiss whatever asks something of them loses the ability to tell what is true from what is merely comfortable, and that damage spreads to everything they judge. Ruin here is the loss of that clear sight, and the loss of the freedom Krishna described just before. The verse asks Arjuna to notice which side of this line he stands on. Shankara reads it as a warning about turning away from the teaching. Ramanuja stresses that the fault lies in resentment toward the Lord's word. Madhva reads the ruined as those who reject it out of hostility.
A traveler is handed a map by someone who has walked the road, and spends the evening circling printing errors in the margin. At dawn he sets off without it and loses his way at the first fork. Fault-picking took the place of using the map, and it dulled his sense of direction as well.
1. Today, when you hear advice you resist, write down the actual reason in one sentence. Notice whether it is a reason or only a wish to be left alone. 2. Pick one piece of good advice you have been picking at, and follow it exactly for three days. 3. At the end of the third day, note what you saw that you could not see while only arguing.
A woman sits in a clinic corridor holding a leaflet her doctor gave her about managing her blood pressure. She has already decided it is too fussy, and she starts listing what is wrong with it: the font, the vague wording, the diet she cannot keep. Krishna's teaching would change that moment in steps. First she would notice that the listing has become the activity, and the leaflet has stopped being used. Then she would ask which single line of it is true and doable. Then she would try that line for a week and see what happens. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind set on finding fault sees only faults, and that this habit makes later judgments poorer. The verse does not promise that following advice brings a cure, and it does not replace the doctor. It does not say every teaching deserves obedience without thought. It speaks of a mind that refuses before it has tried, and of the loss of clear sight that follows.
