The Pull of Nature

Bhagavad Gita 3.33

Meaning · English

Even the wise act in keeping with their own nature. All living beings follow nature. What, then, will repression accomplish?

Three ideas carry this. Prakriti is nature: the inborn make-up of a person, the leanings and habits of temperament that shape what they reach for. Jnanavan is one who knows, the wise. Nigraha is repression, holding something down by force. Krishna tells Arjuna that even the wise act according to their own nature. Nobody is exempt, and all living beings move along the grain of what they are. So he asks what repression will do. The question is nearly rhetorical: forcing a nature down does not change it. Krishna gives this as the reason a person cannot simply declare that they will stop being who they are, and as the reason Arjuna cannot get free by suppressing his temperament. Forced restraint alone is a weak tool. Shankara, as he reads it, takes nature to be the impressions left by earlier lives, and says that force cannot overpower them, so a person needs knowledge and the guidance of scripture. Ramanuja takes it as the residue of past deeds and holds that the wise must direct their nature toward the self rather than fight it blindly. Madhva stresses that this nature is itself governed by the Lord. The verse asks the listener to see how strong the pull is, and not to trust force alone.

A beach ball pushed under the water in a pool. Every second it takes effort to hold it there, and the moment the hand slips, it shoots back up. The ball is a person's nature, the hand is repression, and the surface is where the nature always returns.

1. Pick one habit you keep failing to drop, such as snacking, snapping at someone, or checking your phone. 2. For three days, note each time the pull comes: the hour, the place, and how tired or hungry you were. 3. Do not fight it during those days. Just write one line each time. 4. On day four, read your notes and see what the pull does, not what you wish it did.

A father at the sweet shop counter is on day four of giving up sugar, as his doctor asked. He is tired, it is evening, and his hand is already pointing at the laddus. Gritting his teeth has worked until now, and it is wearing thin. Krishna's teaching changes the moment in steps. First, the pull is read as his make-up speaking, not as proof that he is weak. Second, he sees that a promise made only by force is easily broken when he is worn out, and ordinary experience confirms that tiredness weakens restraint. Third, he can ask what this nature does and when, then arrange the evening around that, for example by taking a different road home. The teaching does not say the craving will vanish, and it does not replace the doctor's advice or his follow-up care. It only says that holding a nature down by force is a poor plan, and that he does better by knowing it well.
