Dream Worlds Within the Body

Gaudapada Karika 4.33

All that is seen in dream is false, for it is seen within the body. In so small and closed a place, how can crowds of beings be seen? Nor is it reasonable that the dreamer goes out and sees them there, for the time of such a journey is not fixed. And when he wakes, he is no longer found in that place.

Gaudapada argues from three facts of dreaming. Three words carry it. Dharma here means the things that appear, whatever the mind holds as a thing. Mrisha means false, in the sense of mistaken: it looks like a solid world and is not one. Pradesha means a place, a region of space. First, the dreamer lies on a bed, and the dream is seen within the body. Yet it shows mountains, roads and crowds. A closed, small place cannot hold them as real things. Second, suppose the dreamer travels out to see them. That does not hold either. Kala, time, gives the reason: the journey takes no fixed time, and a long trip can be dreamed in a moment. Third, on waking, the dreamer is not found in the place he seemed to visit. He is in his bed. So the dream things were never where they seemed. Gaudapada teaches this to show that appearing is not the same as being real. Shankara reads these lines as reasoning meant to be tested against our own experience. Buddhist thinkers such as Vasubandhu also use dreams to show how a world can appear in mind alone. The listener is asked to look honestly at what dreaming was like.

A phone no bigger than a palm can show a whole city, with streets, traffic and a crowd. Nobody thinks the city is inside the phone. The dream is like that: a vast scene lit up within a small, still body, while nothing of it is out there.

1. Tomorrow, on waking, stay still for one minute before you reach for your phone. 2. Recall one dream, even a scrap of it. Ask where your body was while it went on: in the same bed, in the same room. 3. Notice how big the dream place felt and how many people were in it. Compare that with the size of the bed. 4. Write one line about it, then get up.

A taxi driver finishes a night shift and sleeps badly in the afternoon. He wakes with his heart racing, sure he has just driven for hours down a road he did not know, and for a moment he cannot tell which room he is in. Then he feels the sheet, hears the fan and sees the clock. He has not moved. The verse gives him a plain way to settle himself. The body lay here the whole time. The road, the passengers and the long drive were seen within, and the time they seemed to take was not clock time. He can put the dream down as something that appeared and was not a place he went. This is a matter of ordinary experience: everyone who wakes finds the same body in the same bed. The verse does not remove a fright that lingers, and it does not treat troubled sleep or repeated nightmares. Those are for a doctor to look at.
