Having talked things over with friends and others, the one who wakes does not go on to meet them. Whatever he had grasped, the awakened one does not see. In dream the body is without substance, because another body is seen standing apart from it. As the body is, so is everything the mind sees: without substance.
Gaudapada begins with an ordinary fact. A man dreams he is planning something with friends and holding something in his hands. He wakes, and the friends, the plans and the object are not there. The word for this lack is avastuka: a-vastu, no standing thing, nothing that holds its place when looked for. It does not mean nothing was seen. It means what was seen has no ground under it. Then he turns to the dreamer's own body. The commentators read the reason this way: the dreamer sees another body apart from him, so the body he sees in the dream cannot be his true one. The sleeper lies still in bed while the dream body walks about. If that body is without substance, the same may be said of the rest. Here is the step the verse takes. Everything in the dream was cittadrsya, what the mind sees: citta is mind, drsya is the seen. Gaudapada says that as the dream body is, so is all that the mind sees. Shankara reads this as a statement about the dream and the waking world alike. The idea that everything seen is mind's seeing also sits close to what Vasubandhu's school taught in his day. The question behind it is how anything can be shown to be insubstantial. His answer is waking: the one who wakes finds nothing left to meet.
Children build a sandcastle with a moat, towers and a row of shell soldiers. The tide comes in once, and the beach is flat again, with no rubble and no soldier to be found. The dream, its friends and its body are the castle, and waking is the tide.
1. Tomorrow morning, before you get up, lie still for one minute and recall any dream, even a scrap. Name who was there and what you held. 2. Notice how quickly it thins, and that the dream you also had hands and a body. 3. Later in the day, when a worry replays a talk with someone, ask where that scene is happening right now. Stay with the question for a few breaths.
A bus driver wakes at four in the morning, heart pounding. He dreamed he had lost his keys and was shouting at his brother in front of the whole depot. For a few seconds the shame is real. Then he feels the mattress, hears the fan, and sees that no depot, brother or keys were in the room. His pulse settles. He still feels the sting, but he knows where it came from. Ordinary experience confirms the pattern the verse points to. The dream body felt solid while it lasted, and the dreamer could not tell until he woke. Dream detail also fades fast after waking, often within minutes. The verse takes this familiar fact and asks the mind to apply it to the rest of what it sees. That step is the text's own teaching and is not tested by sleep research. The verse does not promise that a real quarrel with a real brother will cost nothing, or that waking from a bad dream ends a fear that has a cause in daily life. Persistent nightmares or dread on waking are worth taking to a doctor.
