Because it is apprehended, the dream is held to be the cause of waking, just as waking is the cause of dream. Since each is the cause of the other, waking is counted as real only in relation to the dreamer. No origination is ever established, so everything is declared unborn. Nor does the non-existent, in any way at all, come into being from what exists.
Three words carry the verse. Utpada is origination, a thing coming into being. Aja is unborn, the a- of denial plus the root jan, to be born. Sat is the real, what is. Gaudapada first sets waking and dream side by side. Each is called the cause of the other, since what we do awake feeds our dreams and a dream leaves its mark on the day. He then draws the point: if each needs the other to count as real, neither has its own ground. Waking is real only as measured against the dreamer. Then comes the turn. If nothing stands on its own, no true origination has been shown anywhere, so he declares all of it aja. The last line shuts the other door: the non-existent cannot arise from the existent in any way. Gaudapada argues this as a teacher answering the schools that explain the world by cause and effect. Some of his arguments run close to Nagarjuna's against arising, and the commentators read him as drawing them toward the one unborn awareness. He asks the listener to look for the first birth, and to notice that it is never found.
Two people stand back to back, each leaning on the other, and both stay upright. Neither is holding the ground. Take one away and the other drops. Waking and dream lean on each other in this way, and so neither can be called the first thing that was born.
1. Tonight, before sleep, say in one sentence what weighed on you today. 2. On waking, spend a minute recalling any dream, even a scrap, and see whether it borrowed from that sentence. 3. At some point in the day, notice a mood that came from a dream or from a bad night. 4. Do not decide anything about it. Only note which way the influence ran.
A mother wakes at five in the morning from a dream of losing her child in a crowd. Her heart is pounding and her hands are cold. She goes to the next room and watches the child breathe. The verse speaks to that moment. Her body reacted as though the crowd were real. The dream was built from the day before, from the school trip form and the busy road. Now the dream colours her morning, and she will be sharper with everyone until noon. Seen this way, the two states pass material back and forth, and neither starts from clean ground. This is the point Gaudapada presses: the text teaches that no first cause can be found in either. Ordinary experience confirms one part of it, since a bad night does weaken the next day. The verse does not promise that the fear goes, and it does not stop her checking on her child. Dreams that keep returning and disturb sleep are worth mentioning to a doctor.
