The one who has seen unreal things while awake takes on their form in dream and sees them there. And having seen unreal things in dream, the one who wakes no longer sees them. The unreal has no cause that is unreal, nor an unreal cause that is real in turn. The real has no cause that is real, as the real is not caused. How, then, could the real have the unreal as its cause?

Gaudapada closes a short argument about cause and effect. Three words carry it. Sat means what is real, from the root as, to be: what simply is. Asat is its opposite, what is not, or only seems to be. Hetu means cause, literally that which brings about. The first lines recall dream and waking. A man sees unreal things while awake, such as a rope taken for a snake. He is absorbed in them, and the same kind of unreal thing appears in his dream. When he wakes, it is gone. Then comes the point. An unreal thing cannot have an unreal cause, since nothing real stands behind either. Nor can a real thing be brought forth by an unreal one, or an unreal by a real one. And the real has no cause at all, since what simply is was never made. The last question follows: how could the real have an unreal cause? The reason is the section's whole aim, which is that nothing is ever born. If no cause can be found for the world, in any pairing of real and unreal, then nothing has arisen. Shankara reads this as the refusal of every theory of origin. Some of this reasoning resembles that of the Buddhist thinkers of his day, who also tested cause and found it wanting. It asks the listener to stop hunting for the maker of appearances.

A coin is tossed in a game, and a child swears it landed in the dark corner. Nothing is there. Nothing makes the coin appear and nothing has been lost. The picture maps to the world as the verse treats it: look for what produced it, in any pairing, and no producer turns up.

1. Tonight, when a worry grows large, ask what actually caused it: a fact, or a picture your mind drew. 2. Write the worry in one plain sentence, then strike out every word that is guess rather than fact. 3. Notice what remains, and how heavy it feels now. 4. Do this once a day for a week, and keep the notes.

A man lies awake at two in the morning, sure that a cough from his father's room means something grave. His heart races. He builds the whole story: the hospital, the bills, the funeral. Then he gets up, walks down the hall, and finds his father asleep, breathing evenly. The dread had no cause in the room. It came from a thought that fed on itself. The verse speaks to that moment. Gaudapada teaches that an unreal thing has no real cause behind it. The man can trace the fear back step by step and find each link was imagined, not seen. He can then look only at what is actually there: a sleeping man, a quiet house. Ordinary experience confirms that fears often fall apart when checked against facts. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that the cough is nothing. If it keeps up, or the breathing changes, a doctor is the right person to call, and real illness deserves real care.
