Meaning · English
Through error, a man awake may touch things beyond thought as if they were real. In the same way, through error, in dream he sees the things that appear there as real.
Gaudapada uses three words here. Viparyasa is error, a turning upside down: taking one thing for another. Acintya means unthinkable, what thought cannot pin down as either plainly real or plainly nothing. Bhutavat means as if real, with the weight of something that exists. The first line says a person awake can reach out to things that cannot be grasped by thought and treat them as solid facts. The second line says the dreamer does the same. In dream he sees what appears there and takes it, without doubt, to be real. The mistake is one mistake, and it runs through both states. Gaudapada teaches this to answer a question that runs through the fourth book: if nothing is truly born, why does a world seem so firm? His answer is that firmness comes from the taking, not from the thing. Shankara reads the error as a wrong taking of what appears. The dream comparison also appears among Buddhist thinkers of his time, such as Vasubandhu, who used it for their own purposes. Gaudapada asks the listener to see that waking certainty and dream certainty feel alike from inside, so the feeling of certainty proves little.
At dusk a coiled rope lies on a path. A walker sees a snake, jumps back, and his heart pounds. The fear is real, though the snake is not. The rope stands for what appears, and the jump stands for the taking of it as real, which is the error the verse names.
1. Tonight, when you wake from a dream, stay still for one minute. Notice how real it felt a moment ago. 2. Tomorrow, when a worry grips you in daylight, name it quietly: "I am taking this as solid." Do not argue with it. 3. Ask what in it is plainly seen and what is added by your own taking. Write the two lists in a few lines. 4. Leave the worry as it is. Only notice the difference.
A man wakes at three in the morning from a dream in which his late father is angry with him. His heart pounds and his hands are damp. For a few seconds he is sure the scene happened. Then the room comes back: the fan, the clock, the quiet. Ordinary experience confirms that a dream feels fully real while it lasts, and that the body reacts to it as it would to a real event. The verse gives that moment a wider reach. Gaudapada teaches that the same taking-as-real runs in the day. The man might then ask, about a daytime fear, which part is what he has seen and which part he has added. He can breathe, name the added part, and still act on what is actually in front of him. The verse does not promise that the grief for his father will lift, and it does not replace a doctor if the nights stay broken or the fear will not ease.
