Meaning · English
For those who say that things exist, because things are perceived and because the world's dealings go on, the awakened have taught birth. They taught it to those who always tremble at non-birth. For those who tremble at non-birth, and who step away from clinging because of what they perceive, the faults of birth will not take hold, and whatever fault remains will be slight.
Three words carry it. Jati is birth, from jan, to be born: the claim that things arise. Ajati is its opposite, non-birth, the book's own teaching that nothing is ever truly born. Upalambha is perceiving, taking hold of a thing as found and present. Samachara is ordinary dealing, the daily traffic of buying, naming and using. Gaudapada says some listeners cling to the existence of things, because they see them and live among them. Hearing that nothing is born, they shudder, as if the ground were taken away. For them the awakened teachers spoke of birth. This is a concession, a first step set down for frightened people. Shankara reads the teaching of birth as a means, not the final word. The second half says what follows. Those who still tremble, but loosen their grip as they look again at what they perceive, will not be caught by the faults of the birth teaching. Any fault left is small. The Buddhist teachers of his day also spoke of teachings fitted to the hearer. It asks the listener to be honest about where they stand, and to treat the gentler teaching as a step to leave behind.
A child afraid of deep water is first walked down the shallow steps of the pool. The steps are not the pool, and nobody means her to stay on them. They give her somewhere to stand while she looks at the water. Birth is the step here; non-birth is the deep water.
1. Tonight, for five minutes, name one thing you hold onto as certainly there: a job, a face, a belief about yourself. 2. Notice whether the thought of it ending brings a flinch. Do not argue with the flinch. 3. Look at the thing once more, as plainly as you can, and see what you are actually perceiving: its shape, its sound, your habit of calling it yours. 4. When talking to someone frightened this week, start from where they stand, not from your own conclusions.
A woman sits in her kitchen the week after her husband's funeral. A relative tells her, kindly, that nothing is ever really lost. She nods and feels worse. The words are too large for where she stands. Gaudapada's verse speaks to that moment. It says the teachers did not begin with the hardest statement. They began with what the listener already held, a world of things that are seen and used, and let the grip loosen by looking again. Here that means she is not asked to give up her husband's reality tonight. She may keep the cup he drank from, the name, the habit of setting two plates. The text says the fault in such holding is slight, and that looking steadily at what she perceives is itself the way out of clinging. Ordinary experience agrees that hard news is taken in pieces, not all at once. The verse does not promise that grief lifts, or that she will stop trembling. It does not replace a doctor if her sleep or appetite fails for weeks. It only says the frightened are met where they stand.
