Arjuna, as Vasishtha Foretells It

Vasishtha turned to Rama and said, think of this world as a dream. Every living being shares it. It has its pleasant scenes, and it makes up the daily story of their lives. It is neither wholly true nor wholly false. Souls cannot sleep forever, he said, so even the waking state must be a kind of dreaming. Life is only a longer dream than the short ones we have at night. People pass from dream to dream and take the unreal for real. They call the solid airy and the airy solid, and they treat lifeless things as living. Then Vasishtha offered a lesson in letting go, the one the lotus-eyed Krishna once gave to Arjuna, by which that prince became free while still alive.

Rama asked when this Arjuna, son of Pandu, would be born, and who was the Hari who would teach him. Vasishtha answered that there is only one soul, and the names are a kind of fiction. It has always been, as the sky rests in emptiness. The whole spread-out world shows itself in it, the way waves show in the sea and ornaments in gold. In it live the beings of every kind, the gods, Indra and Yama, the sun and moon, and the elements. Virtue and vice are set within it as laws, and people are free to follow them or not. The gods keep to their posts because they obey. Yama, lord of death, takes up penance at the end of each great age, sometimes for eight years, sometimes twelve, five, seven or sixteen.

Once, Vasishtha said, Yama sat in his austerities and let his duty lapse, and death stopped hunting living things in every world. The creatures multiplied until the ground was covered and no one could pass, like gnats in the rains that crowd the path of elephants. The gods met in council. After much talk they decided that the living must be thinned out to ease the burdened earth. Ages passed, customs changed, and countless beings came and went. Vasishtha said it would happen again. Yama, son of the sun, will once more sit in penance for twelve years to atone for his killing, and the earth will fill with mortals who cannot die, thick as a dense forest.

Groaning under that weight, and oppressed by lawlessness, the earth will go to Hari for help, as a faithful wife goes to her husband when raiders trouble her. Hari will come down in two bodies, as Nara and Narayana, one a man and one the lord himself. In one body he will be Vasudeva's son, called Vasudeva. In the other he will be the son of Pandu, Arjuna the Pandava. Pandu will have another son, Yudhishthira, called the son of Dharma, who will rule to the edge of the ocean. His cousin Duryodhana will be his rival, and the war between them will be fierce, like snake against weasel, with eighteen legions in all. Through Arjuna's great bow, Gandiva, Vishnu will strike them down and lift the earth's burden.

Arjuna will carry all that is human, joy and anger alike. Looking over the battle lines, he will see friends and kinsmen waiting for their fate, and pity and grief will take hold of him. He will lay down his arms. Then Hari, as Krishna, will speak to him and persuade him to play the hero's part. Krishna told him the soul is never born and never dies. It had no earlier birth and will have no later one. It is unborn and everlasting, and it is not destroyed when the body is. Whoever thinks the soul kills, or is killed, does not understand it. Then Vasishtha spoke straight to Rama: know your own soul as deathless, without beginning, middle or end, and by thinking so you become that soul.

Krishna went on. Arjuna, you are not the killer. That belief is a false conceit, and you must drop it. One who has no ego and is not moved by joy or grief neither kills nor is killed, even if he strikes down the whole world. So let go of the thought of this is I, these are mine, those are theirs. The eyes may see, the ears hear, the tongue taste, but why bring all this into the soul? Claiming a deed that many hands have done is only vanity, and it spoils the deed's worth. So do your duty as a warrior. Do it with your whole attention, give the result to Brahma, and stay as calm as he is. Hold no desires, and no action will bind you.

Arjuna asked Krishna to explain it fully: what renouncing all connections meant, what giving actions to Brahma meant, and what true knowledge and the stages of meditation were. Krishna said the true form of Brahma cannot be pictured, but it can be known once imagination is stilled and desire quiet. Brahma is empty and calm and clear as the sky, and the world bulges out of it like a reflection, just as empty. So what is this ego of yours? It is a tiny part of the universal soul, as a drop is part of the sea, and so are a pot and a monkey. Renunciation means giving up the fruit of your actions. Give your small self into the one Self.

Arjuna asked which form of God he should turn to, the one with a body or the one beyond form. Krishna said Vishnu has two. One has a body and four arms holding conch, discus, mace and lotus, and it is the form for common worship. The other is hidden and spiritual, without beginning or end, and it is called Brahma. While you do not yet know the supreme, keep worshipping the four-armed form, and that will wake you to the light. He then described the soul's presence: it is the taste in water, the flavour in milk and salt, the butter in milk, the shine in a pearl, the air inside and outside every pot, the thread through a necklace of pearls. It is the mirror that shows all images and is never broken when they vanish.

Krishna asked Arjuna what could be destroyed, or feel pleasure or pain, when the divine soul has become the world. As the stone is in the rocks and the water in the waves, so the soul is in everything, and nothing exists apart from it. Then he spoke of pain and pleasure. Heat and cold reach the body and pass, so be patient with them. The soul cannot be touched by what touches the body. A rope taken for a snake frightens until knowledge removes the fear. You are a small wave in Brahma's sea, so drop your pride and fear. Do not mind gain or loss, victory or defeat, but go on like a gust of wind on its own course, and give all you do to Brahma.

Krishna's last words were about action. Do your duties as they come, without hoping for rewards, as God works without aim. Do not cling to doing, and do not sink into idleness. A man busy with business is said to do nothing if he hopes for no reward. It is clinging that makes an action one's own, and ignorance causes the clinging. Someone settled in knowledge may do every kind of work and never be counted the doer. He who has calm and peace, wants nothing from the world, and quarrels with no one is an ornament to the earth. Those who hold back their limbs yet dwell on pleasures in their minds are hypocrites. As rivers pour into the still sea, the souls of holy men enter the eternal God and find a peaceful joy that greedy worldly people never reach.
