Lunar Cycles of Being

Prashna Upanishad 1.12

Meaning · English

The month represents the Creator. Its dark phase is material wealth, and its bright phase is the life force. Thus, different sages prefer different halves.

The lunar month is used as a map for existence. The dark half of the moon corresponds to matter and physical substance. The bright half corresponds to the vital breath that animates life. Because these two forces balance each other, some practitioners focus their rituals on the waxing light, while others focus on the waning dark to align themselves with a specific side of existence.

A battery consists of a positive and a negative terminal. Neither is the whole battery, but the flow of current depends on both. The bright and dark halves of the month are like these two poles, representing the breath and the matter that together power the universe.
