Energy and Matter

Prashna Upanishad 1.13

Meaning · English

Day and night represent the Creator. Day is vital energy and night is material substance. Those who engage in sex by day spill their prana, their life-breath. Uniting in love by night is itself brahmacharya (chaste conduct).

The Creator is seen here as the cycle of day and night. Day represents the active, vital force that drives life, while night represents the physical, dense matter. The text suggests that sexual activity during the day drains this vital energy. In contrast, union at night, the time of rayi, is regarded as brahmacharya, a lawful and restrained conduct.

Think of a battery being charged by a solar panel. The sunlight is the energy flowing in, while the battery is the physical storage. If you drain the battery while the sun is still shining, you waste the incoming power. This represents how vital energy is spent or saved through timing.
