Why Life Deserves Care
Ashtanga Hridayam, Sutrasthana 1.2
Meaning · English
One who wishes for life, the means to dharma, wealth and happiness, should give the highest regard to the teachings of Ayurveda.
Anyone who wants to live should take the teachings of Ayurveda with the greatest seriousness. Vagbhata gives his reason inside the same line. Life, ayus, is not wanted for itself alone. It is the means, the tool, for three things people seek. Dharma is living rightly: doing one's duty, keeping one's word, caring for others. Artha is wealth and livelihood: work, a home, the means to support a family. Sukha is happiness, the ordinary pleasures of being alive. None of these can be pursued by someone whose life is cut short or worn down by illness. So the care of life comes first. The science that teaches that care, Ayurveda, the knowledge of life, deserves what the verse calls the highest regard. That regard is not distant reverence. It means listening to the teachings, learning them and putting them to use.
An oil lamp can light a page for reading, a corner for prayer, a table for a family meal. All three depend on one thing: oil in the bowl. Let it run dry and every use goes dark at once. Life is that oil. Dharma, wealth and happiness are what its light makes possible.
Today's medicine would recognise the core of this line. Poor health narrows a life in plain ways. It limits work and income, strains family life and crowds out enjoyment, so caring for the body does support everything else a person hopes to do. Family doctors make a similar case for prevention, steady habits and taking good advice seriously before illness forces the issue. Dharma, right living, has no medical counterpart. It belongs to ethics and faith, not physiology. The parallel stops at the verse's call for the highest regard for one particular system. Mainstream medicine does not accept Ayurveda's teachings wholesale. Some of its advice on daily habits fits well with what is known. Many of its explanations and remedies have not been shown to work, and some herbal preparations can cause harm or interact with medicines.
