Rama walked first, with Sita behind him, and Lakshmana came last with his bow in his hand. As they went through the forest they looked with delight at the rocky heights, the tall flowering trees, and the quick bright streams. They watched saras cranes and ducks on the little islands, herds of startled deer, wild buffaloes, boars, and elephants tearing at young trees. When the sun was low they came to a lake two leagues wide, full of lilies, swans and water-birds. Then, from somewhere in those waters, came singing and the sound of instruments, though no singer could be seen. Wondering, Rama and Lakshmana turned to the sage Dharmabhrit, who was with them. "We long to know where this music comes from," they said. "Please explain it to us."

Dharmabhrit told them at once. "This lake has always been famous as Panchapsaras. The holy Mandakarni made it by the power of his austerities. For ten thousand years he lay in the water, and for ten thousand years he lived on nothing but air. The gods in heaven grew afraid. They gathered, led by Agni, and said, 'This hermit means to take one of our places.' So they sent five of the loveliest nymphs, as bright as lightning in an evening sky, to draw him from his vows. Learned as he was, they won him, and he gave himself to love. All five became his wives, and for them he built a palace beneath the lake. They live there still, at ease, and the music you hear is their play, with the tinkling of their jewelled girdles."

"How wonderful," the princes said. As Rama spoke he noticed a hermit settlement, strewn with sacred grass and bark garments. He went in with his wife and his brother, and the sages there honoured him. In time he visited the hut of each hermit in turn, staying a month in one place, a year in another, four months here, five or six there, eight months, three, a few weeks, a fortnight. He lived among those holy men in quiet happiness, and ten untroubled years went by. Then, with Sita, he went back to the good Sutikshna's hermitage and lived there a while in peace. One day he stood beside Sutikshna and spoke with respect. "People say the great sage Agastya lives somewhere in these woods. The forest is so vast that I cannot find the way."

"My wife, my brother and I would like to go to him and pay our respects. It is something I have wanted for a long time." Sutikshna was overjoyed. "I was about to urge you to do exactly that. I take it as a good sign. Go south eight leagues from here, and you will find the hermitage of Agastya's brother, on a wooded rise crowned with pippal trees, full of birdsong and lakes and lilies. Stay one night there. At dawn, keep south along the edge of the thicket, and two leagues on you will reach Agastya's home, in the loveliest part of the forest." Rama and Lakshmana bowed, and set out with Sita. They passed dark woods, hills like distant clouds, lakes and streams. Soon Rama said, "Lakshmana, this must be the place. Every sign Sutikshna gave us is here."

"The branches bend with fruit. The breeze smells of grass and ripe pippal. There are stacks of split firewood, and sacred grass laid out, and the smoke of the hermits' fire rising like a dark cloud. The twice-born are coming back from bathing, carrying flowers. Agastya made this grove a refuge, and here is why. Long ago two demon brothers lived here, Vatapi and Ilvala, and they killed Brahmins. Ilvala would take a Brahmin's shape, speak Sanskrit, and invite sages to a funeral feast. He would turn Vatapi into a ram, cook him, and serve him to the priests. When they had eaten, Ilvala would shout, 'Vatapi, come out.' And Vatapi, bleating like a ram, would tear his way out of their bodies. In this way the two of them killed thousands of Brahmins."

"Agastya, at the gods' request, came to one of these feasts and ate the whole monster. 'It is done,' Ilvala cried, poured water over his hands, and called, 'Brother, break out.' Agastya smiled at him. 'How can he come out when I have eaten him? Your brother has gone to Yama's kingdom.' Ilvala, burning with rage, rushed at the sage. Agastya gave him one look, hot as fire, and he fell to ash. He did it out of pity for the Brahmins. This grove is his brother's home." As Rama finished, the sun set. The brothers performed their evening rites, then went in and greeted the hermit, who welcomed them and fed them fruit and simple food. At sunrise Rama said, "I have rested well. With your leave, I will go now to honour your brother." "Go, Rama," the sage said.

Rama followed the path he had been shown, looking happily at hundreds of trees, wild rice, sal, red hibiscus, creepers heavy with blossom, trees knocked flat by elephants, monkeys playing, birds singing everywhere. He turned to Lakshmana. "See how soft the leaves are, how tame the birds and animals. We are close. There is his smoke, and bark garments with garlands. He killed that deathly demon and made all this southern country a refuge. The demons only look at it from far away, with envy. When the Vindhya mountain tried to block the sun's path, it bowed its head at his word and has stayed bowed ever since. No liar, tyrant or cheat can live here. I hope to win his favour, so that we may spend the last years of our exile here. Go ahead a little, Lakshmana, and tell him I have come with Sita."

Lakshmana went in and spoke to the first pupil he met. "Rama, eldest son of Dasharatha, has come with his wife Sita to see the sage. I am Lakshmana, his younger brother, devoted to him. Our father's decree sent us into the forest. Please tell your master we wish to greet him." The pupil went to the shrine of the sacred fire. "Rama and Lakshmana, sons of Dasharatha, are here with Sita to honour you. What do you wish?" Agastya said, "At last. I have long wanted to see him. Go and bring them in with welcome. Why is he not here already?" The pupil ran out. "Where is he? He must not wait." Lakshmana showed him where Rama stood with Sita, and the pupil led them in. Rama saw deer roaming without fear, and shrines to Brahma, Agni, Vishnu, Mahendra, Varuna and many other gods.

Then Agastya himself came out among his disciples, shining like a flame. "Here he comes," Rama said to Lakshmana, and ran forward, bowed, and clasped the sage's feet. Agastya embraced him, asked after his welfare, and gave him a seat. He fed the fire, brought the gifts due to guests, and served them simple forest food. Then he sat and said, "A hermit who fails to honour his guest will eat his own flesh in the next world. You are a king who keeps the law, and you have come to my home." He gave Rama fruit and flowers, and then said, "Take this bow, set with gold and diamonds. The heavenly craftsman made it for Vishnu, who slew demons with it. Take this arrow Mahendra gave, these quivers that never empty, and this gold-hilted sword. They will bring you victory."

As Rama accepted each weapon, Agastya went on. "I am glad you came, and glad of your loyalty, Lakshmana. But Sita is tired. She is young and gentle and never learned such hardship, yet her love for her husband led her into the forest. Let nothing trouble her here. She is faithful, like Arundhati." Rama, hands joined, said, "Show me a place with trees and water where I can build a hut." Agastya thought a moment. "Four leagues from here is Panchavati, beside the Godavari, full of deer and fruit. I know your story, and my love for your father. Build a cottage there with your brother, keep your father's word, and protect the hermits. Go through those madhuka woods, turn north at a fig tree, then up a slope beside a hill." The brothers bowed, took up their bows and quivers, and walked to Panchavati with Sita beside them.
