The Weeping Mind Consoled

Meaning · English

I know your highest form, seen directly, wide as the sky. Whatever form differs from it is like water shimmering on a desert. For me there is no guru, no teaching, no added label, no work to do. Know the bodiless as sky. I am pure by my own nature. You are pure, though you wear a body. The mind is not the beyond of the beyond. And you are not ashamed to say, I am the self, the highest truth? Why do you weep, mind? Become the self itself, by the self. Drink, my child, the nectar beyond all parts, the one without a second.

The avadhuta turns and speaks to his own mind as if to a child. Three words carry the verse. Upadhi is a limiting label, from upa, upon, and dha, to place: a coat of paint laid over a thing. Kala is a part or fraction, so kalatita means beyond all parts, what cannot be divided into pieces. Advaita is non-duality, the one without a second. Now the clauses. He says he sees the highest form as plainly as the sky, and any other form is like the mirage that looks like water and is not. He has no guru, no teaching, no label and no work to do, because the sky needs none of these. He tells the mind that its body does not stain it. Then he checks it: the mind is not the farthest point, so it should not boast, I am the highest truth, as a claim it has merely learned. Then comes the tenderness. Why weep, mind? The weeping is the mind believing itself small. He asks it to become the self by the self, with no outside helper. Last, he offers a drink: the nectar beyond parts. The Avadhuta Gita teaches this because the mind keeps asking for one more rite, one more teacher, one more fix. The avadhuta answers that what is sought has never been absent. He asks the listener to stop borrowing words for it and to drink.

A child cries in a dark room, sure someone has left. The mother has been sitting beside the bed all along, and the child has only to turn and reach. The weeping mind is that child, and the self is the mother already there, needing no fetching.

1. Pick one worry that has been circling today. Sit somewhere quiet for three minutes and name it plainly, as you would soothe a crying child. 2. Say to it silently, you are not the one who is lost. Then stop talking and sit for a minute with nothing added. 3. Notice only whether the crying quiets, even slightly. Then go back to your day.

A mother in a hospital corridor at two in the morning waits for her son's scan result. Her mind runs ahead with worst cases and will not be reasoned with. The verse speaks to her in that moment as to a child, with no argument. First she can notice that the weeping belongs to the mind, and that something in her is watching it. Second, she can stop trying to out-think it, which only feeds it. Third, she can sit still, feet on the floor, and let the mind be spoken to kindly, as the avadhuta does. Ordinary experience agrees that a frightened mind settles faster when it is soothed than when it is scolded. The verse does not promise that the scan will be clear, that her fear will vanish, or that grief will not come. It gives her no medical answer, and the doctors still have to do their work. It names a steadier place to wait from, and the text calls that place the self.
