It is not knowing, it is not unknowing, it is not both. One whose awareness stays like this always has the true knowing, and no other kind will do. It is not learning, not argument, not the discipline of deep absorption, not place or time, not a teacher's instruction. I am the truth that knows itself by its own nature: like space, natural, steady. I was never born and I do not die. No act, good or bad, is mine. I am pure Brahman, without qualities. How could bondage or liberation be mine? If God fills everything, still, whole, without a break, I see no gap anywhere. How can he be outside and inside?
The avadhuta Dattatreya sings of a knowing that is not an act of knowing. Three words carry it. Bodha is awareness, from budh, to wake. Svabhava is one's own nature, what a thing is by itself, before anything is added. Brahman is the whole that has no outside. He begins by refusing three labels: knowing, not-knowing, and a mix of both. Each is a state the mind passes through. The awareness he means does not come and go, and he says only that kind deserves the name. Then he lists what does not bring it: study, argument, samadhi (deep absorption), a right place, a right time, even a teacher's words. These are tools for reaching something far off. He says this is not far off. It knows itself and is like space, which no one has to build or keep up. Next he speaks as that self. It has no birth or death, and good or bad acts do not stain it. It is without qualities, so nothing sticks to it. If so, he asks, who is there to be bound, and who to be freed? The last lines turn on God. If God fills everything without a gap, he finds no seam between inside and outside. The words inside and outside have nothing to cut along. The teaching answers a worn-out seeker who keeps adding effort. It asks the listener to stop treating the self as a distant prize.
Someone turns the house upside down for their glasses, checking drawers and asking everyone, while the glasses sit on their own head. Every search was real effort, yet none was needed. The self is the glasses: already there, found by no method, and the searching is what hid it.
1. Tonight, for five minutes, sit or lie down with nothing to achieve. Do not count or repeat anything. 2. Notice that you are aware of sounds and thoughts without having made yourself aware. 3. When a thought says you are doing this wrong, see that something in you noticed the thought. Let that noticing be enough. 4. Stop when the five minutes end. Do not rate it.
A retired schoolteacher lies awake on a night train. She has tried counting her breaths, then a prayer, then counting backwards, and each failure feels like one more mark against her. Now she is tired and also angry at herself. The avadhuta's teaching would change the moment in small steps. She would stop treating stillness as a task to pass. She would notice that the one who sees the worry rise is not itself worried. She would let the worry pass through unwatched by a judge. The text says the self needs no method, place or time, because it is her own nature. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: trying hard to fall asleep tends to keep a person awake. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise sleep, and it does not cure long-standing sleeplessness. If nights go badly for weeks, a doctor is the right person to ask.
