The whole world shines out, unbroken, without a gap. Ah, the great delusion of maya, this imagining of two and of not-two. With form, without form: "not this, not this," always. Free of difference and of no-difference, only Shiva remains. You have no mother, no father, no relative, no wife, no son, no friend. You take no side and oppose no side. How then does this burning come into the heart? For your mind there is no day and no night, no rising and no setting. You are without a body. How do the wise imagine a body for you?

The avadhuta gives four short answers to one question: why does the heart burn? Three words carry them. Maya comes from the root ma, to measure. It is the power that measures one seamless thing into parts, so that it seems to be many. The avadhuta calls this a great delusion, and he sees even the argument between "two" and "not-two" as part of it. The world shines without a break, and no gap lies anywhere for a second thing to stand in. Neti neti means "not this, not this." Whatever form you name, or whatever you say has no form, the self is none of these. Setting aside every description leaves kevala, the one that is simply alone, which he calls Shiva. Then he speaks to the one who suffers. Mother, father, wife, son, friend, ally and enemy are all roles, and none of them is the self. So the grief that gathers around those roles has nothing in the self to grip. Day and night, rising and setting, belong to the body and its clock. The self is videha, beyond the body, and the avadhuta asks how anyone can claim a body for it. He teaches this here because the heart keeps asking the self to carry what only roles carry. He is not telling anyone to walk away from family. He is describing who is standing under all the names.

A cinema screen shows a house on fire, a wedding, a storm at sea. The people in the hall gasp and cry. When the film ends, the screen is dry, uncut and unburnt, and was never touched by any of it. The self is the screen; the kin, the sorrows and the sunsets are the pictures that pass over it.

1. Tonight, take five minutes with a pen and paper. Write down the one worry that pulled at you most today. 2. Beside it, write the role it belongs to: son, mother, employee, neighbour, friend. 3. Say quietly: "This hurt belongs to the role." Then notice who it is that is noticing the role. 4. Put the paper away and stop. Do not try to fix anything.

A woman sits at a cousin's wedding while two sides of the family quarrel over who should sit nearest the stage. Her aunt has said something cutting about her mother, and her chest is hot. She is a daughter, a niece and a side-taker all at once. The avadhuta's words would work on her in steps. First, she would see that the heat is tied to roles: the daughter who defends, the niece who is judged. Second, she would see that taking a side is itself a role she picked up at the door. Third, the one who watches the heat rise is not the heat. That much gives her a little room, and she can answer slowly or let the remark pass. Ordinary experience confirms that a tired, hungry body makes every insult sting more, so a drink of water and a quiet corner also help. The verse does not promise that the insult will not hurt, or that a real family wound will heal. It does not remove grief, and it does not replace a doctor or a counsellor when the pain goes deep.
