The Self Beyond Doing

Avadhuta Gita 1.65

Meaning · English

Not divided, not undivided; not pain, not pleasure, nor the rest. Not all, and not not-all. Know the self as that which does not perish. I am not the doer and not the enjoyer. No deed is mine, from before or now. I have no body, nor am I bodiless. Why say "mine" or "not mine"? No fault of passion and the rest is mine. The pain of the body and the rest is not mine. Know me as the one self, vast, like the sky. Friend mind, what use is so much talk? Friend mind, all this can be argued over without end. What is the essence I have told you: you yourself are that. You are like the sky.

Four words carry it. Kartā is the doer, from kṛ, to make or do. Bhoktā is the one who enjoys or undergoes, from bhuj, to eat, to take in. Avyaya is the imperishable, what is never spent or worn away. Gaganopama is sky-like: gagana, the sky, and upamā, likeness. The avadhuta Dattatreya begins by taking the self out of every pair. It is not divided or undivided, not pain or pleasure, not everything and not nothing. Whatever label is offered, he sets it aside and says only that the self does not perish. Then he speaks as "I". He is no doer and no enjoyer, and no deed of his lies in the past or the present. Body or no body does not describe him, so "mine" and "not mine" have nothing to grip. Passion and the faults that follow it are not his, and neither is the body's pain. He calls the self single, wide, and like the sky. Then he turns to his own mind and calls it friend. Enough talk, he says. Everything in this world can be turned over and argued about forever. What he has said is the essence, and the mind is that essence, sky-like. The mind is the one that worries, claims deeds and keeps score. He answers its restless question about what it is with one plain statement in place of more argument. The teaching asks the mind to stop feeding the argument and rest in what it has been told.

A railway platform at evening. Trains pull in, doors bang, crowds pour out and the last one leaves. The platform stays where it is, bearing every arrival and keeping none. The trains are doing, enjoying and suffering, and the platform is the self the avadhuta points to.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes before sleep and let the day's worries run on as they like. 2. When a thought begins "I should have" or "why did I", say quietly, "friend mind, enough talk." 3. Notice the stretch of quiet just after the thought stops, even if it lasts only a breath. 4. Do this once a day this week and notice whether the replaying thins out.

A man lies awake at one in the morning, replaying the sharp words he spoke to his brother at a wedding. The scene runs again and again, each time with a better reply. The verse speaks to the mind in this state, calling it friend and telling it that much talk is of no use. In the moment, he could first catch the replaying as talk, a mind arguing with itself. He could then let the anger be a passing event and not a verdict on who he is. In the morning he could still call his brother and apologise, since the teaching does not make the words unsaid. Ordinary experience confirms that a tired, restless mind feeds on repetition and grows louder when fed. The limit is plain: the verse does not remove regret, repair what was said, or replace the call to his brother. It does not treat persistent sleeplessness or low mood, which are matters for a doctor.
