Birth appears, motion appears, and things appear, and only appear. Knowing itself is unborn, unmoving, without any object, still and without a second. So the mind is not born, and so all things are held to be unborn. Those who know it this way do not fall into mistaken seeing.

Gaudapada closes a long argument here. Three words carry it. Abhasa means a mere appearing, a shining-toward, with nothing solid behind it. Vijnana is knowing, from vi, distinctly, and jna, to know. Ajati is unbornness, the claim that nothing ever truly comes to be. The first line says that birth, movement and objects are all abhasa: they show up in awareness without being made of anything else. The second line says what remains: knowing itself, unborn, unmoving, without an object of its own. It is shanta, still, and advaya, not two, so there is no second thing for it to be born from or move toward. From that he draws two conclusions. The mind is not born, and the things we perceive are also unborn. The last line gives the reason for teaching it. Those who see this do not fall into viparyaya, which means turning things upside down, taking appearance for fact. The word vijnana also sits close to the Buddhist consciousness-only teaching of Vasubandhu, and Nagarjuna's denial of arising echoes in the unborn. Gaudapada draws on these voices but keeps his own ground, the non-dual knowing. The commentators read the verse as the summary of his whole case against real origination.

A cinema screen shows a storm at sea, with ships tossed and a flood rising. The screen stays dry, flat and still the whole time. Birth, motion and objects are like the storm: they truly appear, yet nothing has happened to the screen, which is the knowing they all show up in.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with the lights low and watch one thought arrive, such as a worry about tomorrow. 2. Notice the moment it appears and the moment it fades. Ask whether anything in you was actually born or damaged. 3. Do the same once tomorrow with a sound, such as a passing vehicle. Notice the quiet it appears in and goes back to. 4. Afterward, write one line on what stayed the same throughout.

A woman lies awake at three in the morning, replaying a quarrel with her sister. The words feel like events still happening, each one landing fresh. The verse speaks to that hour. Gaudapada's teaching is that appearances of coming and going are only appearances, and that the knowing in which they show up is unborn and still. Step by step, she could notice that the quarrel is a picture in the mind right now, that it rises and thins without her doing anything, and that the noticing itself has not been scarred by it. The tightness in her chest may ease a little as she stops feeding the replay. Ordinary experience confirms that a night's worry often looks smaller by morning. The verse does not promise that the quarrel will be mended, that grief will vanish, or that sleeplessness will lift. If the nights keep coming, a doctor or counsellor is the right person to speak to. The teaching offers a steadier place to stand while the thoughts move.
