Meaning · English
The teacher may be a child, a man lost in pleasures, a fool, a servant, a householder. None of this is worth a thought. Who throws away a jewel because it fell into filth? Do not weigh the poetry of the song. The one with a good eye takes only the essence. A boat with no bright paint and no painted shape still carries across everyone who wants the far shore. That is the awareness, calm by its own nature and like the sky, that without effort has swallowed all things, moving and unmoving.
Three words carry this. Guna means a quality, here the merit or polish of the telling. Sara means essence, the sap or the heart of a thing, what is left when the husk is gone. Chaitanya means awareness, from chit, to be conscious. The avadhuta Dattatreya begins by answering a worry a listener might have: who is speaking, and are they fit to be heard? He lists the poor candidates: a child, a pleasure-seeker, a fool, a servant, a householder. Then he gives two pictures. A jewel in filth is still a jewel, and nobody leaves it there. A boat with no paint and no decoration still crosses the water. So the song's beauty counts for nothing, and the singer's standing counts for nothing. The person with a good eye takes the essence and lets the rest go. The last two lines say what that essence is. It is awareness itself. It is calm without being made calm, and it is wide as the sky. It has taken in everything that moves and everything that stands still, with no strain at all. He is telling the listener to judge a teaching by whether it carries across, and the dress of the teaching is beside the point.
A chipped, unlabelled tin mug is handed to you on a hot road. The water in it is cold and clean. Nobody refuses the water for the mug. The mug stands for the poor teller and the plain words, and the water for the essence they carry.
1. Today, when someone you rate low says something useful, such as a child, a rival or a rambling relative, stop and ask only: is any of it true? 2. Write the useful part in one line on paper. 3. Tonight, notice one time you dismissed words because of the speaker. Give those words a second hearing for one minute.
A young mother stands at a bus stop. A tactless neighbour, whom she avoids, tells her the cough her baby has sounds wrong and she should have it checked. She feels the sting of the manner, and her first move is to dismiss the whole remark. The verse would change that in steps. First she notices that she is judging the messenger. Then she separates the remark from his manner and asks only whether it could be so. Then she acts on what is useful: she calls the clinic. Ordinary experience confirms that we often reject sound words because we dislike the one who says them. The verse does not say every speaker is right, and it does not make the advice true. It does not replace a doctor's judgment. It asks only that she weigh the substance before she weighs the person. The text's own teaching is that the essence, awareness, is what a teacher is for, and that it can be found even through a poor vessel.
