A Hymn That Never Runs Out

Aditya Hridayam 4

Meaning · English

This Heart of the Sun is holy. It destroys every enemy and brings victory. Recite it always; it never wastes away, and it is the highest good.

Agastya names the hymn before teaching a single line of it: the Heart of the Sun. He calls it holy, a source of merit for the one who recites it. It puts an end to every enemy and carries victory toward the one who uses it. He asks that it be recited always, every day. Then he states its worth: it cannot be used up, and it is the highest kind of good.

A village well is drawn from every morning and is full again by the next. The bucket going down each day does not empty it. The daily trip is the point. That maps to the hymn as Agastya describes it: recited every day, and never used up by the using.
