Grief Quieted, Life Lengthened
Aditya Hridayam 5
Meaning · English
It is the blessing within every blessing, the destroyer of every wrong; it quiets worry and grief, lengthens life, and stands above all others.
The list of what the hymn brings keeps going, and this time it turns inward. First, it is the blessing that makes other blessings good, the auspicious thing inside every auspicious thing. Next, it clears away wrongdoing, all of it. Then it calms two weights a tired mind carries: worry about what is coming, and grief over what has already happened. Last, it adds to the length of a life. The verse ends by calling it the best.
Picture a pot on the stove, lid rattling, water spitting over the edge. Turn the flame down and the rattling stops. The water is still there and still hot, but it settles. That is the kind of calm the hymn names. Worry and grief stay in the story, but they stop throwing the lid.
