Facing the Rising Sun

Aditya Hridayam 6

Meaning · English

Honor the sun as he rises, crowned with rays, bowed to by gods and their rivals alike, the shining one, the maker of light, lord of all the worlds.

Until now Agastya has praised the hymn. Now he names who it is for and tells Rama to honor him. The sun is called by what he does. He carries rays. He is rising, coming up at the start of the day. Gods and their rivals, two sides of an old quarrel, both bow to him. Then come three titles: the shining one, the one who makes light, and the lord over every world. The instruction itself is plain: honor him.

Two neighbors who have not spoken in years both open their curtains at dawn. The same morning light falls across both kitchen tables and warms each one the same. Neither owns it, and neither can keep it from the other. In the same way, gods and their rivals both bow to the sun, whatever else divides them.
